On the globull warming front--Pikes Peak has had its snowiest winter in more than a decade.
And gas prices have retreated slightly in advance of the Memorial Day weekend.

NY....your comments about the movie "Letters from Iwo Jima" were so right on.
I am incensed not because they show the human side of the Japanese fighting at Iwo Jima, but because he decides to show Americans as barbaric and without mercy. Without giving too much away in the movie, he takes the typical liberal approach to make the American soldier without conscience. Knowing how Americans have for the most part treated prisoners with mercy and kindness, Eastwood ignores that completely. He could have taken a different direction and does not!
We are a compassionate nation in times of peace and war. To depict us as something other than that does a tremendous diservice to all of the Americans who have fought and died for this country! I know that not every American soldier is honorable... but 99/100 are.
I don't think I will watch that movie. I don't think Eastwood ever had the character/backbone of someone like President Reagan...he more less blows with the wind..if it is popular to back this country, he is there, if it is popular to bash this country, he is there!!!

I think most of us take these movies of WW 2 personally because we had relatives who fought during that war.

Yes, it is a time to Remember those who have gone on, a time to pray for our wounded. A time to say thanks to those who are serving. Without them this country would not exist as we know it. We’re fortunate to have fine young people who are willing to protect this country.
Good Morning. I’m getting a late start today. We went to the Casino last night for dinner to celebrate hubby’s birthday, which was last week.
Our customers have their crops in the ground, which means the two of us can leave the property together, again.
It is sprinkling here. Nothing serious, but not an ounce of the moisture will get away, as it is coming so slowly.
I’m off to sit by the window and watch it rain!

It just started raining here. I had been outside weeding, but came in when the rain got too heavy for me to continue.
The lake in front of our house is out of it’s banks. This is the first time I’ve ever seen it so high. A “small” creek, at the north end of the lake, now looks like a bubbling river. The lake is in the middle of small hills and the hills look like sheets of water rushing into the lake. It is an amazing sight. To the west of us the sky is beginning to have a little blue, so maybe we’ll be rain free for a little while. Later today we’ll be catching more rain. One area to the west of us has received 22 inches of rain in the last 48 hours. The drain pipe to our stock tank is doing a pretty good job of keeping the tank from overflowing into the pasture and the road into our house. This is amazing.
How great that you and Mr. IG can leave together! I hope the unexpected road trip is a pleasant one.
Yippee! Our vegetable gardens are tilled and hubby planted our first planting of sweet corn. Tomorrow I hope to plant a few tomato plants, cukes and beans. The tomato plants I planted in a container and were hit by frost are coming back. That makes me happy.

Dear Senator Harkin,
As a native Iowan and excellent customer of the Internal Revenue Service, I am writing to ask for your assistance. I have contacted the Department of Homeland Security in an effort to determine the process for becoming an illegal alien and they referred me to you.
My primary reason for wishing to change my status from U.S. Citizen to illegal alien stems from the bill which was recently passed by the Senate and for which you voted. If my understanding of thisbill’s provisions is accurate, as an illegal alien who has been in the United States for five years,all I need to do to become a citizen is to pay a $2,000 fine and income taxes for three of the last five years. I know a good deal when I see one and I am anxious to get the process started before everyone figures it out.
Simply put, those of us who have been here legally have had to pay taxes every year so I’m excited about the prospect of avoiding two years of taxes in return for paying a $2,000 fine. Is there any way that I can apply to be illegal retroactively? This would yield an excellent result for me and my family because we paid heavy taxes in 2004 and 2005.
Additionally, as an illegal alien I could begin using the local emergency room as my primary health care provider. Once I have stopped paying premiums for medical insurance, my accountant figuresI could save almost $10,000 a year.
Another benefit in gaining illegal status would be that my daughter would receive preferential treatment relative to her law school applications, as well as “in-state” tuition rates for many colleges throughout the United States for my son.
Lastly, I understand that illegal status would relieve me of the burden of renewing my driver’s license and making those burdensome car insurance premiums. This is very important to me given that I still have college age children driving my car.
If you would provide me with an outline of the process to become illegal (retroactively if possible)and copies of the necessary forms, I would be most appreciative.

For some reason, people have difficulty in that many newspapers simply won’t publish letters to the editor which they either deem politically incorrect (read below) or which does not agree with the philosophy they’re pushing on the public. My wife, Rosemary, wrote a wonderful letter to the editor of the OC Register which, of course, was not printed. So, I decided to “print” it myself by sending it out on the Internet. Pass it along if you feel so inclined.
Written in response to a series of letters to the editor in the Orange County Register:
Dear Editor:
So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the people now in question aren’t being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry.
Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr. Lujan why today’s American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented. Some
would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.
They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture.
Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity. Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany,
Italy, France and Japan . None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan. They were defending the United States of America as one people. When we
liberated France, no one in those villages were looking for the French-American or the German-American or the Irish-American. The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country’s flag and waving it to represent who they
were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl.
And here we are in 2007 with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. That’s not what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900’s deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an
example by those waving foreign country flags.
And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty, it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill. I wouldn’t start talking about dismantling the United States just yet.
