Sanjaya's new low: 'Utterly horrendous'.....(told performance worst in history of show)
WND ^ | April 17, 2007

Posted on 04/18/2007 4:57:54 AM PDT by IrishMike

Sanjaya Malakar, known for his wild hairdos and frequently pitchy singing style, hit a new low tonight on Fox's "American Idol," according to judge Simon Cowell who characterized his performance as the worst ever in the history of the show, now in its sixth season.

"That was utterly horrendous," said Cowell.

Malakar, 17, known nationally – even internationally – by his first name only, has survived the first several cuts in the program that relies on public voting to eliminate one contestant each week.

He has stimulated a national debate, with his own fan base supporting him enthusiastically and others holding their ears each week as he competes with far more talented contestants vying for the "American Idol" crown and all that goes with it – recording contracts, fame and fortune.

Malakar has become such a national talking point that some speculate he might even win the contest.

Even White House hopeful Hillary Clinton was inexplicably asked about him in a recent interview.

"That's the best question I've been asked in a long time," she said. "Well, you know, people can vote for whomever they want. That's true in my election, and it's true on 'American Idol.'"

Malakar performed the Bonnie Raitt song, "Let's Give Them Something to Talk About," and, for sure, America will be talking about it tomorrow.

But this is the same guy who on last week's show claimed that Sanjaya's performance was "not horrible" when in fact, it was (by almost any measure you care to use.) I guess the ol' double-reverse psychology thingy didn't quite work out....

Planted question! It would be a safe bed that billary couldn't tell you the name of any of the people on the show.

Well, if the “votefortheworst” crowd is trying to manufacture a travesty, they’re doing a good job. I assume there will be some sort of change in format next season. i.e., the judges will select a certain number of finalists - say, the top five - and then let the public vote on those. That would ensure that a clown like Sanjaya can’t destroy the integrity of the program. Otherwise, there’s no point in watching (or auditioning).

Heh, your question calls to mind a certain Spy magazine cover from back during Bubba's second term (IIRC). I've Googled the caption ("Hillary's Big Secret") looking for a scan of that cover, to no avail.

I'm betting that some other FReepers remember it, though.

Cowell trades on being obnoxious. He also rolled his eyes last night when a contestant who is a Virginia native spoke in sympathy to the Virginia Tech tragedy. He’s just an a-hole, that’s his “shtick”, just like Sanjaya’s is goofy hair styles.

All that’s needed to fix American Idol’s problems is that they change the voting method so that you vote AGAINST the person who does the worst, instead of voting FOR the people you liked. The current method is a horrible way of voting - just look at Chris Daughtry getting booted last year with six or seven weeks left - everyone knew he was top 3 material.

If Idol survives to go another season, the Judges should think very hard about giving a no talent contestant a pass to Hollywood.

I blame all three Judges for this mess because they thought it was "cute" to give the guy a pass.

Besides ruining Idol's credibility, they gave the College crowd a new "hobby"... voting for the "worst" contestant to win.

Well, if the “votefortheworst” crowd is trying to manufacture a travesty

Travesty?? It really does not matter. The people who have lost would have lost eventually anyways. Sanjaya may make it a few more weeks when the votes are still spread thin. Once you get to the top 4 or 5, it takes more than just a few million votes to make it. It is not like this is the first year this has happened. It does not effect the ultimate outcome.

Why? The top talent is still left and it will make no difference in the outcome. Sanjaya may still last a few more weeks while the vote is still diluted, but is done once they hit the top 5.

Travesty? Some people (see: people that love music as an art-form) feel manufactured music is a travesty. Sanjaya's success is more a representation of art than watching the other automatons spit out songs like so many sausages from the sausage factory.
