SELMER, Tennessee -- A preacher's wife told authorities she shot her husband after a long buildup of domestic problems, according to an audiotape that prosecutors played Friday at her murder trial.

SNIP

Investigators have said she admitted shooting her husband on March 22, 2006, and that it had something to do with his constant criticism. On the tape, she says the couple's domestic problems had reached a boiling point after many years of conflict.

"It's just a lot of stupid stuff," she said. "I love him dearly, but gosh, he just nailed me in the ground. ... The first of our marriage, I just took it like a mouse, didn't think anything different. My mom just took it from my dad -- that stupid scenario."

Sounds like she just wants to get on with a trial and sentencing.

I’d make a joke, but I feel sorry for her. She knows she committed an evil act and is more concerned about that than about getting off a conviction.

I don't see how she gets off in the trial, but the article said:

"..Prosecutor Walt Freeland has said bank managers were closing in on a check-kiting scheme that Mary Winkler wanted to conceal from her husband. He said Mary Winkler had become caught up in a swindle known as the "Nigerian scam," which promises riches to victims who send money to cover the processing expenses..."

That is a dumb thing to fall for, maybe part of an insanity defense. One, she is not smart and two she snapped when criticized.

Seems to me she deserves a medal for ridding society of one more terrorist...

Maybe it is a little premature for a statement like that. Maybe she is just a murderer.

What tripe. The church of Christ has no different a doctrine on the role of women in the church or home than most other mainline evangelicals.

Whatever fantasy you are deluding yourself with is bounded by your own ears.

Not guilty by reason of insanity.

She did not appreciate the consequences of her own act , and started voting Democrat.

Ban all guns now.

Has nothing to do with doctrine. Has to do with a culture of isolation and a mentality of moral superiority that I have personally experienced dozens of times.

Though I don't have firsthand experience w/ the CoC, I know firsthand of other denoms with the same problem. I'm not saying it drove this woman to do what she did, but it probably didn't help their marriage.

You are describing David Koresh like cults, not mainline evangelicals.

Typically people under that sort of control do not act out as she did.

Coupled with the fact that she was embroiled in a Nigerian check-kiting scheme, your little fantasy is more about your prejudices than any facts of this case.

I followed this case closely from the beginning. There is absolutely no proof so far that this woman was abused in any way nor that her husband knew she was involved in the check kiting scheme. The evidence that will be forthcoming will be interesting.

It is my belief that she is going to use the abused housewife defense and smear this man’s name. He can’t defend himself because he is dead. What witnesses will be produced beyond her own father that will point to evidence of abuse? We’ll see. But so far no one has come forward saying they saw evidence of any abuse.

Last of all, she shot the guy in the back while he was in bed sleeping. Hardly self defense. She didn’t shoot him in the middle of a heated violent argument. She could have left him at any time or walked out of the door while he was sleeping if she was so abused but she didn’t. And after she shot him she unplugged the phone so he couldn’t call for help and took off with her 3 little girls taking the murder weapon with her. Why did she need the gun with her? Why not leave it there?

Mary said she went over to her husband and wiped blood off of his mouth. He asked her “why?”. If she was abused he wouldn’t have had to ask and Mary didn’t say “because you abused me” she said “I’m sorry” and left him there to die. These are her own words stated in her confession. She didn’t leave her attorneys much to fight with except to turn her into a victim.

I have been watching her body language from the ill concealed smirk when she was sprung from jail to the smug attitude in the courtroom while she wears her cross proudly around her neck. This woman is no victim.

That's not the culture I've found. I wouldn't expect it in general nor look for it. Yes, some people fail and lapse into an unchristian attitude of moral superiority. We can read a concentrated account of people who failed in the book of II Timothy, but that didn't shake the apostle Paul's faith as he stared death in the face.
