We never got one of those accidents when I was on the HS track team, but there were javelins and discuses, disci, whatever flying in all random directions. The javelin chuckers had that smirk on their faces all the time like 'I can put this through your neck from across the football field.'

Someone at my high school impaled himself with one. He tried to stop a run away discus with the javelin and he tripped. Miraculously it missed all of his vital organs.

I threw the javelin throughout High school and yeah, you'd better pay attention. Some officials do seem to get a bit lax.(Never saw anyone close to getting hit though.)

Warwickshire had dismissed the Kalahari Batsmen for 140, and then it was their turn to face this extraordinary Kalahari attack. Pratt was the first to go, but Pratt and Pratt put on a second wicket stand of nought, which was broken by Odinga in his most hostile mood.


A compilation of the day's play. Natives in normal cricket gear. Pratt at crease as per usual cricket coverage. Cut to a low shot of the bowler thundering up towards the wicket. (a huge spear sticks right through the lower part of his leg; they appeal and he turns and limps manfully off)

Typical of Umbonga's hostile opening spell was his dismissal of V.E. Pratt, who offered no resistance to this delivery... (cut to native bowler bowling a machete; it hits the ground and does a leg spin up, slicing off the batsman's head as he waves his bat) ... and he was caught behind.


The batsman's severed head lands in the wicket keeper's gloves. He throws it in the air with a flourish.

Same thing happened at the Air Force Academy in the 70-71 time frame, as I recall. Someone was running across the athletic fields and didn't notice the javelin sticking into the ground in front of him. Jammed the end straight into his chest... We were quite a ways away but saw the ambulance come out.

TEchnically, they need to resolve where the foot was before the foot moved when the hole appeared in the foot, lest the javelin has to be thrown again because the hole thong moved when the hole appeared in the judges foot..

That happened to my Chemistry teacher when I was a sophomore in High School.

She was the spotter and for whatever reason didn't get out of the way.

Being that she was 300 lbs, I never saw it coming....
