AMD is strongly considering a move to open source its newly acquired ATI graphics drivers, according to a report at InfoWorld.
The decision would provide the opportunity for independent developers to ramp up performance for X Window, OpenGL and client virtualization, areas in which ATI binary drivers are currently not available.
News of AMDs deliberations comes hot on the heels of Intels decision to open up the source code for 2D and 3D acceleration in its upcoming 965 Express Chipset family graphics controller.
Linux users will no longer have to rely on proprietary driver software to get the best performance in gaming or graphic intensive modelling for engineering or design.
Intels decision will also make it easier for Linux developers like RedHat and Novell who are planning more GUI eye candy in their distros.
Good. Maybe now they'll work.

Every time this topic comes up, those who are in positions to have their voices heard screw it up.
Whenever it gets mentioned about (x company) open sourcing their drivers, people in the OSS camp need to shout'em down instead of getting excited.
"Hell no we don't want you to open your drivers. We want the specs so we can create our own drivers"
Until this becomes the demand, we are shooting ourselves in the foot and will not get what we want.
