300 Pit Bulls Rescued After Owner Killed
The Indy Channel ^ | August 8, 2006 | Internet Broadcasting

Posted on 08/08/2006 1:40:54 PM PDT by Abathar

CLEVELAND, Texas -- Hundreds of pit bulls were rescued from an illegal dog-fighting breeding ring after a man was shot to death, officials told Houston television station KPRC.

The Houston Humane Society said 300 pit bulls were discovered on a 23-acre property in Liberty County.

Last week, the owner, identified as 25-year-old Thomas Wagner, was shot and killed in a home invasion at about 4 a.m., according to deputies.

The Humane Society went to the property to collect the animals.

Officials said transporting the dogs was a big undertaking because they had to be kenneled in separate crates so that they would not attack each other.

The conditions of the animals have not yet been released.

A home invasion on a property that had 300 pit bulls kept for fighting? Sounds strange....

Dog fighters are scum.

Yes, they are. It would be poetic justice if their dogs all turned on them.

That's one helluva home invasion if 300 pitbulls couldn't fend them off. Did they come across the lake in a wave of Higgins boats?!

Yeah, just like the breeder was. I would hate to be the guy who has to collect and handle all those dogs, I bet some of them would attack anything that moves given the way they were raised.

Gee, somebody involved in dog-fighting killed in a home invasion?! Couldn't possibly be drug-related. (/sarc) I sure as hell won't be losing any sleep over his death.

Oh I agree, they deserve better than the owner does. I am not a cruel person, but would anyone want to adopt one of these dogs after they were trained to fight like this? Humanely put them down and then go after breeders like this guy, I can't believe his neighbors didn't turn him in.

The title is inadvertantly misleading, IMO.

These dogs have not been "rescued". They are going to be euthanized.

Round up all the human participants in this dog-fighting ring, and feed them to the pit bulls as a last meal. The dogs deserve to die painlessly; the humans do not.

The thing that most anti-pit bull people miss is that they are bred to not be aggresive towards humans(that doesnt mean the exceptions arent out there) ...that and I am guessing the owner was used to dogs barking all the time.

At least they won't starve to death, or bleed to death, as they would have without intervention.

I really pity the dogs, but it's a rare rescue that could take that many, no matter what the breed or background. It's a bad scene no matter what, no ending that won't make any dog lover sick.

It's a myth to think there's a difference. Aggression and dominance are aggression and dominance. The only difference between dog aggression and human aggression is where the dog sees you in relation to his own status.

The dogs were no doubt all caged and/or chained up on very short, strong chains, so not in a position to attack anyone. And this is the sort of establishment where it wouldn't be unusual for thugs to be showing up at all hours, and dogs to be barking wildly at all hours (I don't imagine that dogs who are trained to fight rest quietly in their cages right nest to other dogs all night). Most likely the thug(s) who did the deed were people who had had previous dealings with the deceased, so they would have known the layout of the place and been able to surprise their target, and the deceased might also have been slow to recognize that this time they weren't their to patronize the business (even if he got early warning, he was probably outnumbered and outgunned, and for obvious reasons wouldn't have been inclined to call for police assistance).

You're asking the wrong person.

I am not qualified to judge pitbulls' demeanor except what I read.

I have a friend who has a brindle shaded one that claims would lick you to death.

Would I like to have a child anywhere near a pitbull? Not under any circumstances.

If they were bred to fight, then their gene pool is probably defective as far as turning them into house pets.

Pitbulls are like corvettes to some men. They're penis extensions.

Rather they had been golden retrievers.

Oh I don't know about that, I bet 300 yellow labs or golden retrievers would get placed before they had to put them down. Once the story hit the news I bet people would come from all around to help out.

And? What you said doesnt speak towards the genetics and breeding of an animal...your right dogs do look at you as in comparison to status its what they do that matters and the amount of aggresion they hold..to think that its simply a one standard that doesnt change through out breeds or with breeding is to ignore that there are certain traits that are able to be bred down or enhanced through a breeding program or simply removed altogether..otherwise if traits werent able to be so adjustable through breeding is to ignore the fact that hundreds of dog breeds were created each with there own specific characteristics and native temperments.

Boy that's one run-on word-salad of a sentence you've got there!

Of course dogs are bred for particular traits, and some have much stronger personalities than others, by breeding. Point being dominance is dominance. The only difference between human and dog aggression is the dog's perceived status.

Victims of breeding and (mis)handling. Poor creatures.

In my area, the pits seized from fighting rings are held as evidence until the trial for dog fighting/animal abuse is finished. Often the animal has only just returned to health by the time that happens, and then it's destroyed. 300??? I suppose a token few would be held for trial and the rest destroyed on site.

Even if the owner is dead, hopefully there's enough evidence to find and prosecute his customers for animal abuse. Or maybe the investigators feel they have enough on their plate with the owner's death.
