It is not so much the movie (obvious fiction) as it is the new low that our society is reaching. Does anyone think that this movie would have been accepted in 1956 instead of 2006 ? There is always open season on christianity in this culture. There are millions of people going to see the movie this weekend. We assume that all of these people are smart enough to know that it is just fiction. But are they ? There are people who honestly believe that there was a 9/11 conspiracy. A JFK conspiracy. Elvis could still be living ! The world is spinning so fast right now. There is so much confusion on our planet currently. This poison in the blood stream of our culture is disgusting. and yes, it IS BLASPHEMY. Some of you may say "ahh, it is just a movie". Let me tell you that there are people who would let it factor into their view of christianity. Our society is full of dark things right now. I do not think this is good for christianity or the world.

Saw the movie today. It's a great movie!
Do you think Jesus would be a fan of the movie ?
I was going to argue but I can't think of anything similar that would have been made in the 50s or 60s.
However I like a good flick and may see it when it comes out on DVD.
Hey, you said it was fiction. I said it was a good movie, not history.
There are people on this forum who seem to buy into the fiction, and defend the whacky conspiracies as the gospel truth.
Does anyone think the actors of 2006 would have been accepted in 1956?
I try not to get too excited about things like this movie, it tends to drive their success.
Lots of people are buying into the historic 'facts' of this movie.
It had the second highest weekend gross in history.
"Backdoor Babes pt2" in the adult film section might be a good, well made movie, but that does not make it positive or morally healthy for someones mind.
I am talking about the social and moral affects, mostly.
It was an antiAmerican film set in Iraq (with Gary Busey as a Jewish doctor stealing Iraqi prisoners organs for wealthy American and Israeli clients, not sure what role Billy Zane played).
I watched Bull Durham on TV the other day. I can't stand Tim Robbins or Susan Sarandon but I enjoyed the movie just the same.
I liked it when the catcher tells the batter what the pitcher is throwing next and says "when you speak of me, speak well". LOL
Have you ever heard of suspending disbelief? Most movies require you to buy into the premise no matter how absurd. If you believe in Darth Vader for a few hours and enjoy the movie you don't necessarily have to believe there was a galaxy long ago and far far away where it all really really happened
13 The Da Vinci Code Sony $77,000,000
Jesus Christ is not Darth Vader. Jesus is the messiah.
Whatever
whatever ?
No but in the original Star Wars trilogy, we were led to believe that Vader was a Hitler figure.
Then we spend 3 movies learning about young Hitler. A lousy story arch.
And in a galaxy HOW large, it resolved down to being dependent entirely on the actions of handful of players?
I am watching the Da Vinci code presentation on the history channel. It is very interesting and well done and explores all these ideas and legends.
What is the problem? This is not a smear of Christianity...it is a discussion of possible historical and mythical questions.
I would really be in big trouble if my spirituality were threatend by a movie, a book or even a discussion of alternative possibilities!
Religious Rigidity is not religious strength of belief.
I guess it should come as no surprise...however.
Our nation is struggling against itself.....we are divided.
One wonders how a Bill Clinton could be elected....twice....or a Gore, almost.
Millions went to see/supported The Passion of Christ.
Not as many, but millions still, will see this movie, and in my opinion, I don't think the folks who supported that movie are the ones going to see this one!
The DaVinci goers are clearly supporting a movie that blasphemes Christ and His Word.....
...but they might not see or understand this .....
We will all be held accountable whe we meet our Maker.....we will all give account.
Why would folks go see this.....after hearing good argument from respected leadership in the church....both Catholic and Protestant?....
..and why are they using the same talking points of the liberal pundits ....'it's only fiction?'
....I hope you also realize not everyone, even on this good forum, is a God fearing conservative.
and I think you need to go back to being a hippie ! we are running out of hippies !, nah.. just kiddin.
It disgraces the image of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is meant to trash christianity. that is the problem here.
so many people are lost.
The devil does not care of he is liked or not. He just wanted to be tolerated and accepted, that is how he gets a foot hold.
like homosexuality, abortion.. think about it, that is his style.
What do you think that God would think of this movie ? What would you think Jesus would think of this movie.
I am about to explode into a rant here,
WHAT IS THE MAIN FIGURE OF CHRISTIANITY, JESUS, WHERE IS HIS MESSAGE, IN THE BIBLE ! THIS MOVIE TAKES JESUS CHRIST AND DISGRACES HIS HOLY IMAGE. WHY CANT YOU GET THAT ! THAT IS THE PROBLEM ! HOW IN THE WORLD CAN YOU ACCEPT THAT AS OK. MY GOODNESSS...
"deep breath, drink of mountain dew, more deep breaths."
whewwwww... I need a massage.
I think you should have put this in the religion threads so I wouldn't have encountered judgemental people.
Judgemental is being afraid.
I am judgemental ? whew.... I am judgemental ?
This movie is totally disrespectfull to Christianity and Christians !. I would not condone a movie that trashes Jews or Muslims. My mother taught me to respect people. Evidently you do not see what why this makes people upset. If you knew Jesus in your life, and knew how great he was, and saw society for what it is becoming, you might be issuing a ditto to about everything I have said in this thread.
I am not asking anyone to convert, or condemning anyone to a pit of fire. I am just pointing out the disrespect that this movie shows to Jesus.
and Christianity.

Your comment: "I call it something other than blasphemy. I call it a religious smear."
I agree with your distinction.
Sony Pictures told me exclusively this morning that Da Vinci Code earned $224 million worldwide, making it the second biggest opening weekend of all time worldwide. (The only movie that did better was Star Wars 3, the last of the prequels, with $254 mil)
Actually the movie doesn't say he is not the Savior at all. Quite the contrary. All it says is that Jesus was a mortal man who married.
all I can do is roll my eyes.
Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess someday.
A mortal man cannot take away the sin of the world.
the majority of humans will be in trouble on judgement day, but not all of us !
that is the part you got wrong right there.
True,
There are people who wish they could prove that Jesus was just another guy with a some good ideas who got himself some vagina.
In other words... the want to prove that he was just your run of the mill human male.
That is very disgusting.
Its hard to convince people of the need for a Savior when they believe they deserve heaven anyway. One of the most difficult things Ive ever encountered.
Well, it wouldn't have had a $224 million worldwide opening weekend, the second-highest in history. When did 1956 become the gold standard for Goodness in the World? :)
The line I like, about the ball flying far and wide, is, "Something goin' that far oughta have a damn stewardess on it, don't ya think?"
That's domestic only. Worldwide, it's second, after the Star Wars "Sith" movie.
Please consider the "decaf" message in #9. :)
