I've watched the debate over immigration with some interest. When I heard President Bush was going to address the nation, I hoped he would be able to bridge some differences, or at least take some steps to do that.
Sadly, from what I've seen from some, not all, on FR and TV and talk radio is a lot more anger from people who continue to see the President as the enemy of America.
He's been honest and straightforward about his position on immigration: he's wanted a guest worker program for a long time. The administration has apparently sent back 6,000,000 illegals in the past five years and increased by 66% the funding for the border--or something like that, I forget the details.
He has been stellar in the War on Terror and tax cuts. We've not be re-attacked in five years and the economy is by any reasonable measure BOOMING.
I can't understand why so many see him as an enemy to the state.
The 11,000,000 illegals didn't all come in "under his watch". He wants them to earn citizenship, and he has pledged to double border agents and funding by the end of 2008.
This man is America's enemy?
I was sad to hear a conservative pundit gripe "this is too little too late" last night. So what is the choice? Vote Democrat?? Vote third party? You may as well vote Democrat, because that is what will happen.
Sorry, I refuse to see George Bush as the enemy. That title is reserved for Democrats in the world of politics.
Contrary to claims the administration's investigation and arrests of employers hiring illegals is down from the Clinton administration, this table tells a different story. Credit RedBloodedAmerican for finding this:

By 2004, the annual inflow of foreign-born persons was down 24% from its all-time high in 2000, according to the Pew Hispanic Center analysis of multiple datasets collected by the Census Bureau and other government agencies.

Note that I don't think anyone is claiming that nothing should be done, but the hysterics claiming that nothing is being done couldn't be more wrong.

I would hate to be President. Very lonely.
I'm not trying to start a flame war or gripe session. I just had to get this off my chest.
I don't see him as the enemy either. Only hysterics and shysters do.
I see him as a very wise, compassionate man and I am thankful to have him as my president.
I'm tired of folks picking on FDR over Yalta too dammit..lol
You are correct.
The job gets even lonelier when the prexy forgets who elected him.
Hello - I don't see President Bush as the enemy. I do believe he is mistaken in his position concerning immigration, and it is a serious mistake. I can't support that position as currently constituted.
Then he shouldn't ACT, like the ENEMY!
I want him to throw out all the illegals after my driveway gets paved.
I never think of President Bush as an enemy. I disagree with him strongly on issues of immigration and spending, but he is NOT the villain that some disgruntled conservatives make him out to be. There is too much vitriol from some people, the kind of vitriol that should be reserved only for people like Ted Kennedy and the Clintons.
Thanks for the post. I was thinking I was the only around this db who was thinking similarly to what you wrote.</p>
And apparently he thinks the base voted for him because of that proposal, when they voted for him despite it - we voted for him primarily because of his stance on the WOT and because of who his opponent was.
And since the base grumbled but went along with his education proposals, his spending and his Medicare prescription benefit, none of which were remotely conservative in nature, I guess his advisors thought the base would go along again yet again with his guest worker plan. But they were dead wrong.
He had one chance to heal the pending rift in the GOP. And he blew that chance last night, IMO. It doesn't make him the enemy. But Bush has made himself an albatross on GOP House members in the 2006 elections. Now, as Shermy noted yesterday, GOP House members who wish to be re-elected will only do such by distancing themselves from Bush.
Bush is not the enemy, altho he does seem to be on the side of Mexico instead of his own country. Mexico is not considered our enemy, but by the way the Mexican govt aids and abets it's citizenry in invading our country, it may not be a stretch to consider them one.
Yeah, well Teddy Roosevelt was an enviro-whacko, blowhard. There I said it.
I don't see him as an enemy. I just completely disagree with his position on illegal immigration.
B-I-N-G-O!
Just my opunion, of course.
I'm glad to hear you don't listen to the MSM regurgitating the Demorats talking points either. Unfortunately, many of our FRiends have succumbed.
P.S. You forgot the excellent new members of the Supreme Court.
I don't consider him an enemy yet. But I do question anyone's stance on illegal aliens that panders to a 3rd world maggot who's only interest is to send his problems north and not try to solve them himself.
From where I sit (and I maybe wrong), Bush is a one world globalist. He doesn't believe in national borders, and the only reason he even made that speech last night was because he is getting raked over the coals by the people who helped put him in office.
An American President should have the Sovereignty and Security of the US first and foremost in his mind.
Unfortunately the President doesn't seem to want Sovereignty, and other than the war overseas, seems to be paying only lip service to our Security.
That's my opinion.
Every now and than a volcano erupts across the land and the people who flee to post on FR want someone to blame and it's usually the President. No matter the topic, it's always Bush's fault!!!
After a while it becomes quite boring and predictable.
the pubbies have a problem. their choices like those of the people on flight
93 are between certain death and near certain death.
If they allow the illegals citizenship--the illegal/legals will do what they did after 1986: vote democratic and tip the country to a democratic majority as they have done in california and that because after 1993 in California many mexicans began voting in california to preserve gov bennies--for which the dems excel. There won't be social security benefit for Americans of retirement age from the illegals/legals because they will suck up what ever they put into the economy--as they are now. They won't yield a net gain. ie they won't pay for anyone's social security.
Everyone but everyone who has ever been to any government building that dispenses anything from health care to drivers lisences can't help but notice that the place is swamped with foreigners. Basically the welfare state system set up in the 1960's is being totally gamed by foreigners.
If the president gets his way he will demoralize the republicans bringing on the effects of the 1992 & 1996 elections. There may not even be a third party but when W builds in a reversal of the fortunes of the war of 1848--it creates a kind of passivity in people when they see their leaders commit them to the status of world historical losers.
If Bush decides to put up a wall and expel the illegals then there is a chance to preserve Republican majorities. It would be helpful to promise that the USA will kill the cost of water desalination and transport so as to make it economically possible to turn the deserts 1000 miles from any desert seacoast -- green. (this would increase the habitable size of the USA by a third and double the habitable size of Mexico.)This work is already ongoing and will be accomplished in five years or so--or in about the same time frame that GM promises to have a cost effective fuel cell car. For GM as it is for the GOP its do or die time.
The chief difference between the pubbies current predicament and flight 93 is that they are currently in the cockpit. (if you presume that bush is a republican or at least more of a republican than a bilderburger.)
The point here is that if these guys cannot act like loyal americans at least they can act like republicans. ie people who have a stake in the continuity of the republican party.
Since they are not doing this the republicans in the white house and senate all need to be smacked on both sides of the face and kicked in the but.
You're welcome.
I'm must sick about the lies of the naysayers on this forum -- saying the president is doing nothing. What unadulterated BS that is.
Ding, ding, ding!! We have a winner, as opposed to a whiner.
Oh dear, we must not forget the loyal Americans now. There are some loyal Americans on this board that think GW is a quisling don't you know. These are the same loyal Americans that think GW can do nothing right. These are the same loyal Americans that think you are a traitor if you do not believe all illegals should be deported immediately.
"I want him to throw out all the illegals after my driveway gets paved."
Simple and insightful! and offers greater insight into the problem then the Bush bashers are willing to recognize.
His views on immigration and guest workers are pre 9/11.
He may not be our enemy, but he is the mouthpiece for our enemies within the unelected cabinets and their well placed advisors, otherwise known as political operatives.
They will take the President down to push their agenda, as they are very well doing. Bush is expendable to those who are promoting the big picture world citizen concept.
The point is that these people are criminals who should never be rewarded the greatest gift in the world - US Citizenship. And Bush's pledge to do these things by 2008 - very convenient that that is the end of his second term, don't you think?
I thank God every day for President Bush and how he has been able to keep our Country safe since 911. The hate is so out of control and so obvious it's because he has been successful...can anybody say more seats in 2000, 2002, 2004 and hanging on for 2006...we just need to realize the alternative is unimaginable.
LMBO!
The landscaping is done. The chickens are plucked, and the fields are weeded by hand. The septic is emptied, etc etc
I'm with you.
Careful now, you might get accused of being a spammer.
He doesn't do 100% of everything I want done, therefore, he is the enemy. /sarcasm
Honestly, while he isn't the enemy, he is certainly not acting like a conservative. Reagan had the uncanny ability to blend politics with conservatism. He knew how to advance conservatism as a means to political gain. Bush I ran away from conservatism like the country clubber he was. While W is not his father, he nonetheless treats conservatism as something to run away from/mutually exclusive from a means for political gain. He acts like he has to hide the ball to get the American people to vote for and support a conservative agenda. It is a shame he didn't get the message that conservatism wins the day more often than not.
I thought it was President Bush that made the Minutemen along the border the enemy.
Fortunately for us conservatives, President Bush has delivered time and again on issues important to conservatives. Only certain myopic people struggle to realize that.
Oh, come on, Vicente is his BESTEST FRIEND !!!
That was no conservative. That was Michelle Malkin.
Malkin is a reactionary who wrote an entire book praising FDR for confining Japanese-American citizens behind barbed wire during WWII.
She thinks we ought to do the same thing to Muslims.
She has an audience who loves red meat, and she gives 'em all the blood they want.
Well said sir. Total agreement here.
Your saying that how you feel represents all 63 million votes?
