Living History Farms offers
two types of Traditional Dinners
and an Afternoon Tea Experience
From November to March, Living History Farms Historic Dinners program offers guests the opportunity to step back into the past and enjoy a lantern-lit evening of hearty food and fun. All meals are prepared with historic recipes popular in their respective time period. The evenings also include Victorian parlor games at the Tangen Home or a tour of the barn at the 1900 Farm. Casual dress is suggested.

1900 Farm Dinners

A horse-drawn wagon carries guests to the farmhouse, where the smell of freshly baked rolls and hot cider welcomes you. Take your seat at the table next to the kitchen stove and enjoy a hearty home-cooked meal served family style by our historical interpreters.

Make room for dessert with a lantern-lit trip outside to our 116-year-old barn. Or stay inside and peruse the 1897 Sears & Roebuck catalog and enjoy a game of checkers. Don’t forget to ask for the authentic turn-of-the-century recipes before you leave for home. Bundle up again for the wagon ride back to your vehicle. Dinner is served weekdays at 6:30 p.m. and weekends at 1:30 and 6:30 p.m. By special request, a 1:30 p.m. dinner is available Tuesday through Friday.

1875 Tangen Home Dinners

Stroll along a lamp-lit boardwalk to the cozy 1875 Tangen House. Sip spiced punch next to the glowing parlor fireplace while a host shares stories of Victorian life. Savory aromas summon you into the elegant dining room for a multiple course meal. Interpreters serve dinner family style, along with a few insights into 19th century cookery.

After dinner, gather with fellow guests for some lighthearted parlor amusement. Join in a bit of music or a dramatic recitation led by the parlor host. Everyone will want to take part in a charming Victorian guessing game or a rollicking round of “Hunt the Thimble”. Savor the rich pound cakes and relaxing conversation before leaving this unique dining experience. Authentic recipes are shared.

Dinner is served at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. By special request, a 1:30 p. m. dinner is available Tuesday through Friday.

Victorian Afternoon Tea

Enter the world of 1875 Iowa by paying a call at the Flynn House. Begin your visit with a peek at the private side of a Victorian family. Look for clues in the library to discover the people and personalities that filled Des Moines society in 1875. Gather in the parlor for an interactive seasonal program. Round out each visit with an intimate afternoon tea, complete with a delicious assortment of Victorian sweets and savories.

In December, explore the rich traditions of "A Victorian Christmas;" peek under the elegant Flynn holiday tree and see what might have been in store for the children. In March, take a romantic glimpse into some "Victorian Springtime Sentiments" by uncovering the hidden messages in the language of flowers.

All programs are offered 1:30-3:30 pm and are $25 per person. Seating is limited to 16 guests each day. Casual dress. Reservations for teas are accepted throughout the year.

General Information


Historic Dinners are $45 per person. Afternoon Teas are $25 per person. Gratuity is optional.
Historic Dinners last about 2 1/2 hours. Afternoon Teas last 2 hours.
At Historic Dinners, all guests are seated together family style to create a full table. At Afternoon Teas, guests are seated 4 to a table. (Evening Teas are served buffet-style.)
At Historic Dinners, 10 people are a full table, but we can seat up to 12 in one party. At Afternoon Teas, programs are designed for 16 people.
Wine brought to the Historic Dinners will be served during the meal. One bottle of wine per 2 people. No beer or liquor, please. Wine is not allowed at Afternoon Teas. Please dress for the weather.
Payment Information


A deposit equal to half of the total is required within 2 weeks of placing the reservation.
The balance is due 2 weeks before the dinner or tea date.

Got a question for you guys. While playing video on my PC, some are distorted color wise. I can't seem to find anyway to change the settings. If it was my Norton doing it, I would think that it would block it completely. The video of Cyn falling I could see ok. The staving horses and the fat cat were all psychedelic like. Do you know if there is a way to change media player?

Good morning, glad to hear Cartman is okay. Yes, the two quarter horse gelding we purchased with the Leopard mare, Friday. They are two really nice horses.

He did come out of the crate... He slept at the foot of our bed all night. ecurbh thinks he's layin' around more than usual, I don't know. Sometimes I think he could die in his sleep and we might not notice for a day or two ;~D

LOL, altho that's really not funny.

It's chilly here today, the wind mostly. I feel like being lazy today:) I've got so many projects going right not, I'm wondering around from one to the other. I've got a good book started, I like doing those puzzles (I think I'm finally getting the hang of them, I just did one in 17 minutes:), I have to check in here, of course,:) and yesterday I finally got started on going thru all those old old newspapers and cutting out the interesting stuff and making a scrap book. I think it's going to be a lot funner then I thought it would be. Reading some of the other events in these papers, other then the headline that it was saved for is really interesting. I made it thru 1 paper last night, Nov 22, 63, Kennedys assasination.

For example:): Tbone steaks for 69 cents a pound, new houses for $10,000 with a monthly payment of $60!!!!!! The movie section and TV sections are so funny. Also in this paper that announced his death, there was two articles about things Kennedy was going to do in the future, like dump LBJ as hisVP in the next election, and a phone call to some old VP who was celebrating his 94 birthday.

Those papers and the old ads are great, they are a lot of fun and will only become ~more~ interesting the older they get.

We had fun with some wadded up newspapers that had been used as insulation in our beach house. We looked and could tell when they had done that and what was going on ;~D

Got a call from the vet this morning, Tuffy is improving. I think it might have been those shoes aggravating whatever is going on. He said Tuffy is much happier, doesn't have that dull look anymore. Thank God for that.

Nice pictures of your ride. Harley looks like he put on some weight. Or maybe that is winter hair. SIL brought home a palomino pony. Registered QH and Q pony. She must be only about 14 hands. When they get her out, I will take some pictures. They will work with her and sell her for owner.

We are having a lot of wind today also. Not too cold. I got my cleaning done this morning, so I can play my game this afternoon. My group is planing a big battle...
