The 'Hobbits' (on Flores Island) have been pretty much accepted to have been Homo-Erectus and one was buried with an 80,000 year old 'well-worn' shell necklace. 'Art' goes way back.

An 80,000 year old necklace implies these little guys survived the massive Toba explosion nearby. Amazing.

Or, they walked in on the place and found stuff just waiting to be picked up.
Remember, the Toba explosion happened, then plants and animals from other places moved in.
Alternatively, it wasn't all that bad.
