White Sox Are Second Team in Second City
Yahoo News ^ | Oct. 13, 2005 | DON BABWIN

CHICAGO - Its most famous team is the one that cheated, the one forever branded the Black Sox. Its most enduring image may be the outfielder doused with beer while standing against the outfield wall, or maybe the two drunken fans running onto the field to attack a coach.

Then, again, it may be the decades of losing. Not the romantic kind tied to some mysterious curse, but the kind that comes with simply playing badly.

As the Chicago White Sox take on the Los Angeles Angels for the right to play in the World Series — something they haven't done since 1959 and haven't won since 1917 — they may be the most maligned or just plain overlooked team in baseball history.

The Sox are like the Mets: A team of REAL MEN overshadowed by a bunch of metrosexual pretty boys on the other side of town.

oh my God - I forgot what verse in the Bible called it, but I do remember that one day, a sporting event would be decided by a poor call. I can't believe that day is upon us!!!

Look - AJ played smart alert ball and put us in position to win (Buerhle didn't hurt any either) when the break was handed our way. The Angels had to pitch a four-out inning - not an enviable task, but it's been done before.

Paging Arnold Rothstein.

I have no doubt that the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim And All of the Rest of the Metropolitan Area Except for Pacoima will overcome this blatant attempt by a tainted franchise to once again steel a championship and prevail.

o......kay.....

Here's how baseball works - the umpire makes decisions about what he sees in the field. Based on those decisions, the game continues. When the ump blew the drop third strike call, AJ had no idea of knowing he was wrong. AJ is NOT Steve Austin, the SIx Million Dollar Man guy I mean, not the wrestler, and had no bionic eye to see if the ball hit the ground or not. All he did know is that no one called him out. At that point he had an obligation to try for first - it was hardly "cheating" - it's how the game is played. No one, not even Christy Mathewson himself who would be asked by umpires (they didn't have four back in those days) if a runner was safe or out if he was in position to see it better than them, not even he would walk back to the dugout without being called out, just because the ball MIGHT have hit the dirt even though he had no idea at that time.

Learn how the game is played or at the very least HTML before invoking either, all right?

even the batter knew he was struck as he proceeded to walk towards his own dugout and then turned around and walked over to first base. had he truly believed in heart of hearts that it was a live ball, why did he stop at first base?

WHITESOX ARE CHEATERS AND LIARS

It isn't on Pierzynski. It's on the ump and the catcher. virtually all HS and college catchers are taught to tag the running when your glove hits the dirt when catching the ball. That said I DO THINK he caught it on the fly. It was just a head's up play by the White Sox guy and the Umps jammed the Angels up.

Take your White Sox are cheaters crap somewhere else. It infantile.

THe walking toward the dugout is legit - he just swung and missed and it took a second to realize he was never called out. I can see that. Stopping at first I can't dismiss right away - for the zillion times I've seen that play I can't recall where the ball was in relation to any Angels by the time he was at first. Too many beers by then for my memory to replay it perfectly. You raised a key question with that.

Either can I, but you would think if he truly believed (which i dont, i think hes lying) that the ball was live, he would have proceeded to round the bases instead of stopping at first and waiting for yet another ump to tell him.

The Angels got screwed. The White Sox got lucky. It happened and its over.

It isn't as if the RedSox have never gotten a call to go their way or anything.

Even with that call- it's still two outs runner on first. The Angels still had a good chance to Git-R-Done, and they didn't.

Blame the umps, if you must, but don't fault the players for making the best of the situation.

Again I ask, If the batter truly believed it was a live ball, why did he stop at first base?

just because it's funny to me that a guy who gets on baseball threads with a name like "beansox" claims NOT to be a Red Sox fan.

It would be even funnier if you came on here with a name like chowderheadpatsfan and then say you aren't from Boston or something....

fine whatever...

The WhiteSox didn't cheat.

They took what was given to them by a horrible call by the umps.

You better believe NO ONE on the Angels are saying the White Sox cheated because THEY WOULD HAVE DONE THE EXACT SAME THING in the same situation. Don't act like they wouldn't have because they would.

I think you need to gain a little perspective here.

We aren't talking about robbing a bank.

We are talking about baseball. A game in which phantom tags, neighborhood plays and stuff like this are the norm.

NOT ONE of the White Sox players are culpable for this. The UMPIRES are. The Angels catcher is an accessory because he didn't tag the runner when he could have.

The rest of this is just whiny BS.

WE ARE NOT L.A. We are the Anaheim Angels (contrary to what the wallet-minded new owner thinks) and we ALWAYS WILL BE. What is it now - the Los Angeles Disneyland of Anaheim? The Los Angeles Knott's Berry Farm of Buena Park? That the owner has shoved this name change down the throats of the public, not to mention the FANS, not to mention the City of Anaheim, is such BS. With pressure, I hope the owner will put it back the way is SUPPOSED to be. The ANAHEIM ANGELS forever !

I guess you haven't played much baseball have you? This happens all the time. Seems to me that the fans are the ones having issues with the other team, NOT the Angels players. I think you need to get over it. The call happened. It was wrong, but that isn't the White Sox fault.

Let me guess, if Vlad had done the same thing you would want him to be honest and tell the umpire before he ran to first that the ball DIDN'T hit the ground? are you freaking kidding me?

yeah. There is no question in my mind which is the better team here.

The fact that the Angels played 4 games in 3 different cities in 3 different time zones after 3 cross country flights and went 2-1 in those games speaks to that.

Give them a chance to get some rest and Games 3 and 4 should go to the Angels.

This cheating crap is absolutely stupid.
