Baby Monkeys Rescued After Mom's Death Babies Torn From Mother's Womb

POSTED: 11:59 am EDT August 24, 2005 UPDATED: 12:12 pm EDT August 24, 2005

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Two baby monkeys in Brazil were rescued from a Rio de Janeiro neighborhood after their mother was killed by a car.

Both of the monkeys were torn from the mother's womb during the crash. They were discovered by firemen at the scene of the accident.

The two infants were rushed to a local zoo, where experts are caring for them.

Weighing less than an ounce when they arrived, the baby monkeys are in good condition and have attached themselves to a stuffed monkey the zoo is using as their mother.

Zookeepers are keeping the body of the mother monkey, and plan to inject the babies with her scent.

This will enable them to be accepted by their peers if they are returned to the wild

OK Im no primatologist but this seems to me like a really bad idea. It seems to me that smelling the right way would just let them get close enough to try to join a group. At that point they well may be rejected for not communicating properly or beaten/killed for missing social cues.

They really should find a decent zoo or something for these two.
