I use it occasionally. If there is a personal attack that gets excessive, if there is overly crude language being used, or if there is a racist or over the top statement.
A couple of times, I have posted something which I immediately wanted to take back, like some personal information about a person. I hit the abuse and explained to the Mod that perhaps my post was ill thought, and he deleted it for me.
If I get freepmail that they are posting to me while obese and nude, that's a report of abuse for me.
Way more than I needed to know.

I've only used it about three or four times, and always for blatant DUh trolls. And that was for either death threats(we had one clown show up one day and ask why we didn't just whack the Witch along with the rest of his leftwing rant) or blatantly obscene things like posting porn pictures.
I've used it once since I signed up.
Basically only a death threat or completely over the top trollish (DU) behavior will make me use it, and usually by the time the (latter) happens, it's already been taken care of in one form or another.
BTW - I don't feel bad for reporting abuse. I'm a hard-edged libertarian - conservatives and libertarians should police themselves, so if someone can't abide the the few rules that Jim has, than they deserve to get their hands slapped or their @$$e$ kicked by the mods.
