Seriously, as someone who had taught her children to read, I think only a person who has already learned to read would be able to read with the letters messed up.

"I think only a person who has already learned to read would be able to read with the letters messed up."

Yep.

You have to be able to read the correct way before your brain can process the incorrect spelling.

Well, there is an additional dimension to this. I was able to read, comfortably, the entire post, part of it quite quickly, yet I find that obvious misspellings bring my reading to a halt, why typos remain mostly invisible.

Why is that?

According to the basic rule, that should be LAMO.
Except that's not a word, so it doesn't really apply...

This post brings to mind somthing I saw back when I was in the 3rd grade (I'm 43 now). There were these books on a shelf in our classroom. The strange thing about them is that the words in the book had other letters imposed over them, but you could still make the words out. There were about 8-10 books like this. Was this perhaps some sort of reading test for dyslexia or something?

Actually, the fact that this type of writing is understandable is an indication that we are relying on "sight reading" rather than phonics.

"Sight Reading" is the way people learn to read languages such as Chinese and Japanese, by recognizing the shape of the word. Thus the importance of having the first and last letter in the correct position.

The problem with this type of reading system is that it limits the reader to words whose shape he already knows. Phonics, on the other hand allows the reader to sound out unfamiliar words and relate them to what he has previously heard as well as the context in which they are used.

"Sight Reading" has been taught primarily in the public schools in the US for the last forty years or so, although recently there has been a shift back to phonics, due to pressure put on teachers and administrators to raise reading scores. "Sight Reading " does have one advantage, in that it can increase reading speed, although not reading accuracy.

(Yes, I chell specked tihs psot.)

We had an older secretary and we bought a PC to make her work easier.
I had an program that would randomly start the characters on the monitor start falling to the bottom of the screen.

I installed it and when she started typing a letter the characters started falling, She screamed at me to come help.

I asked her how she broke the computer and she started crying.
I showed her what I had done to the computer and she got a little mad at me.
I don't believe she ever used the computer again.

The reason I have taught my four youngest to read is because of the public schools deplorable record teaching reading. I tested the three oldest with the post and they did fine. I showed it to my six year old who is just learning and he said it was silly, the letters were all messed up.

I'm afraid the proponents of the 'whole language' system will say, "see, we told you it would work!" which will do even more disservice to the children of our country.
