How long do we leave our flags at half staff?

I see that my neighbors still have theirs at half staff. Who knows how long we're supposed to fly them at half staff?

And I also understand (and someone can check me on this) that if you have a flag that cannot fly at half-staff (e.g., it is on the side of your house), then you should fly it with a black ribbon attached to the staff.
I put the ribbon in my flag (belatedly) last evening.

You are correct. If you cannot lower a flag to half staff then a black ribbon should be attached to the flag.

It should be attached to the top of the staff.
