Mel Gibson has signed a deal with Newmarket to handle U.S. distribution for his controversial movie about the death of Jesus, now newly titled "The Passion of Christ."
Gibson's Icon Productions will retain all rights to "The Passion" while Newmarket will distribute the film for a cut of the gross, according to the entertainment magazine Variety.
Gibson sources told WorldNetDaily Icon is planning a release timed with Ash Wednesday, which next year falls on Feb. 25. Earlier reports had Gibson considering a release tied to Easter, which falls on April 11.
Icon is distributing "Passion" itself in the UK and Australia, where it already has its own distributing operations, according to Variety.
Gibson has so far invested $25 million on the film. With dialogue in Latin and Aramaic, the movie will be subtitled. Original plans called for no subtitles.

I hope it's not a "limited release" where they only have it in a few theaters in certain cities.

From what I've seen, this film of Mel's is not only an amazing cinematic accomplishment, it is an important use of the filmmaker's art. To do what Mel Gibson has done requires far more than technical ability, it requires tremendous courage, especially when Hollywood tends to sex and drugs and the baser characteristics of the human race. The Passion makes graphic the Love of God in Christ, the act only the Creator could accomplish for His creation. THAT is a topic greater than modern cinematography has the courage to approach, but Mel has done it with inspiration, heavenly inspiration.

First of all let s see who Mel Gibson is. According to published reports he and his family have not the nicest vision of Jews at all. His father denies the holocaust etc. But this film should not have been made. The theory that Jews are responsible for the killing of Jesus has long been questioned, and to make a film where the scene looks so real will no doubt fuel anti-Semitism in the world.. I have not seen it but those Jews that I know who have seen it are very disturbed by it,

I have not seen it either. The people who I know who have seen it are Catholic and they loved it. They have not afterwards vandalised temples or attacked any Jews. I think your fears are unfounded.
I believe that Jews were involved in the execution of Jesus is factual. Jews of today are as responsible for Jesus' death as are white Americans of today are for slavery in this country.

People who have seen it have said it follows the Gospel Account of the last hours of Christ. If it does then what you are saying is that the Gospel is disturbing, and I suppose should be banned from pulpits in America because it might provide anti semites with ammunition. Since the Gospel is the cornerstone of Christianity then I guess Christianity should be banned until it finds a way to separate itself from Matthew, Mark, Like, and especially John.
To: joobers
This will probably be a well-made movie, but I don't think it will be fun to watch. I love a certain type of violence onscreen, but I hate to watch torture scenes. Braveheart has both, and I usually turn it off 20 minutes before the end. Then I watch the Battle of Falkirk again!

Ok, first, let's look at Mel Gibson. What has he said specifically about Jews that was anti-Semitic? And please leave out his family, unless you want to accept responsibility for everything your family has said in the past.
Second, please specify how a realistic enactment of the crucificion, based exclusively on the gospels, would "fuel anti-Semitism"? Wouldn't the audience feel sympathy for the Jewish victim, His Jewish mother, His Jewish disciples and His Jewish followers? Perhaps this movie can show the world how this was Jewish in-house fighting, and how we're all reponsible for putting Jesus on that cross.
Third, when you say our Holy scriptures are anti-Semitic, isn't that anti-Christian? If not, why not?
Maybe you need to go to a site where intolerance towards Christianity is more accepted. D.U. comes to mind.

Jews of today are as responsible for Jesus' death as are white Americans of today are for slavery in this country.According to true Christian doctrine every one of us are as responsible for Jesus' death as were the Jewish theocracy of 2000 years ago.
The argument that belief in the facts of the crucifiction is anti-semitic is ridiculous on its face.

Given the handful of Jewish leaders that have seen advanced screenings of an unfinished cut I feel fairly certain that:
those Jews that you know who have seen it
can be counted on the fingers of one of your butt cheeks.
That being said, I'd like to give you a going-away present ... but you have to do your part.

Please look at the reason Gibson made this film. If all he wants is to show his love for Jesus, then he should have made it to DVD, why release it worldwide to theaters? Again HE should not have been the man behind it

Sorry you feel that way yoely.
I will give you that his dad is a nut. But having a nut for a parent does not an antisemite make.
And an accurate telling of the Passion does not an antisemite make, any more that the fact that some rapists are black means all blacks are rapists.
But based on Mels film history like Braveheart, The Patriot, We Were Soldiers and some flops in between, I'll be making the opening day.
Perhaps you can catch CBSes Ronald Reagan instead, which might be more to your liking.

You mean the ones who violated the confidentiality agreement every viewer Gibson has shown the film to had to sign.
What Gibson has put on film is a graphic depiction of Christ's last 12 hours - as recounted in the Gospels.
The ADL isn't the only organization that is or will be throwing a fit over the power of this story. Count on N.O.W., People for the American Way, PETA, and probably the folks at the Animal Liberation Front to chime in with their whining before its all said and done ... the same folks that had nothing but derision for the Christians that were offended by Scorsese's Last Temptation of Christ ... but it was only "freedom of expression" then.

The theory that Jews are responsible for the killing of Jesus No, actually it hasn't been questioned. It's pretty well documented.
The thing is, the early church sprang forth from Judaism, thus we are all "the Jews."
And, just for the record, real Catholics don't go to the movies on Good Friday - no matter what's playing.

This film is (supposed to be) a graphic depiction of the Holy Gospels. There are principalities and poweres who do not want the Gospel to be spread. Are you in league with them?

If it's a limited release, you may have folks protesting the theaters for a different reason- to demand it be shown. If that happened, I suppose the powers that be could make it accessible.

Usually if it gets popular enough they will send it to the bigger theaters and not the "art house" type theaters. I think My Big Fat Greek Wedding was originally in limited release and so was Pulp Fiction.
I'm near Chicago so they will probably show it there, but I'd rather see it in a theater closer to home.

Presuming you're not here just to make a unfavorable first impression...
the film will be released and screened.
Go see it.
Come back and give you first-hand impressions.
Besides, how can a film about a guy who never hurt anyone (as far as we know)
and got executed for his troubles...be pure hate?
Not to worry...this film won't bring on Kristallnacht II (sp?).
It will remind a LOT of marginal Christians of why there should have never been
a Kristallnacht I.

Yoely,
I almost forgot ... there's a song in this for you too .. from The Wizard of OZ:
I could while away the hours, conferrin' with the flowers
Consultin' with the rain.
And my head I'd be scratchin' while
my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.
I'd unravel every riddle for any individ'le,
In trouble or in pain.
With the thoughts you'll be thinkin'
you could be another Lincoln
If you only had a brain.
Oh, I could tell you why The ocean's near the shore.
I could think of things I never thunk before.
And then I'd sit, and think some more.
I would not be just a nothin' my head all full of stuffin'
My heart all full of pain.
I would dance and be merry, life would be a ding-a-derry,
If I only had a brain.
Enjoy
