Hamas still holds over a hundred Israeli hostages and has refused repeated offers for exchanges; this can't help but present the impression that these hostages may no longer be in any condition to be exchanged. That's a horrible thought.

Hamas is being ground down. Guerrilla forces and people's militias like Hamas tend to do poorly in the long run against well-organized, determined conventional forces. In a phrase, guerillas lack staying power and lose unless major forces come to their aid or their adversaries fail to press their attack until a decisive outcome has been achieved.
