[There’s no strategic reason for US special forces to be on Jinmen, 2 miles from - its only to either send a message, or provoke a war (depending on your point of view)]
China’s rulers find their inability to rule all under heaven provocative.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tianxia
[Tianxia (Chinese: 天下), literally meaning “(all) under Heaven”, is a Chinese term for a historical Chinese cultural concept that denoted either the entire geographical world or the metaphysical realm of mortals, and later became associated with political sovereignty. In ancient China and imperial China, tianxia denoted the lands, space, and area divinely appointed to the Chinese sovereign by universal and well-defined principles of order. The center of this land was directly apportioned to the Chinese court, forming the center of a world view that centered on the Chinese court and went concentrically outward to major and minor officials and then the common subjects, tributary states, and finally ending with fringe “barbarians”.]
It’s the world’s misfortune that cutting their ambitions down to size will be costly.

And does anyone believe China isn’t aware of their presence and knows each by name. The Chinese espionage network has been infiltrating the US for years. Their spies are throughout the government, the Pentagon, industry, academia, etc. - many of which are on the payroll where they spy. The FBI and CIA know of many but not all.

The CIA has a rep for being terrible at getting human sources from foreign governments. But the fact is numerous high level sources have made their way to the US, including a cabinet-level player by proxy - the sibling of an aide to a purged Politburo member, and the head of the Central Party School. Hard to imagine an Undersecretary or bird colonel defecting to China. And yet their Chinese equivalents are in the US defector relo program. One defection may have led to the spy plane incident.

Taiwan (ROC) owns the Kinmen (Quemoy) Islands, which are located very close to mainland China’s Fujien province. Same with Matsu islands.Taiwan's Quemoy Islands are about 6 miles off the coast of China.

One day, perhaps, our leaders will give some credence to the wisdom of prudently avoiding (rather than eagerly pursuing) foreign entanglements. Smh

Gateway. It’s what they do.
No mention of how many. Just enough to send a message but not make a big deal of it. Put the ball in the Chicom’s court-whadaa ya gonna do about it? We’ll see.

There is no border between Taiwan and China. There’s a huge expanse of ocean.
