And then they want you to wait in line to get your receipt checked (Walmart).
I refuse this illegal search.

This is BS. First off at $16 or $18 an hour you’re not gonna hire anyone of quality who can stay because that’s not enough to pay the bills. For a long time work, companies need to be paying probably $25-$40 an hour nowadays.

there are some places where no one has to stand in line at the checkout or at the exit door. most of them are shutting down though.

"And then they want you to wait in line to get your receipt checked (Walmart)."

Which you got by being an unwilling employee for them as a cashier to get out of there. So where's my employee discount? It's not just a search at the door, it's detainment.

It’s especially clear in the blue states.

“Why aren’t there enough cashiers?”

“Because a hundred thousand people are fleeing this state every year, and the ones with a work ethic are not the ones masochistic enough to stay behind.”

The blue states provide enough benefits without working that young people "prefer" not to work. Often they live rent-free in their parents home and have been taught that it's "honorable" to be poor. I blame permissive parents who don't have the balls to say "No" to their kids and a failed educational system.

Too many people don’t want to work and think they should get everything for free.

Fine to check receipts at warehouse clubs, after all you signed for it on your club application. Not other places, if you are suspected of shoplifting that is an entirely different scenario.

I recently saw a sign in a restaurant reading, “the whole world is short-handed.” And here in California, it’s going to get a lot worse in a couple of days, when the $20-per-hour minimum wage kicks in.

You are right it is an illegal detainment, it has already been litigated and Walmart lost. This is the reason they never even question you if you skip this line.

The young people coming up often can’t do math, or are afraid to talk to people, or don’t have the social skills and comfort with our formerly-common language to talk with the public.

Very true and frightening at the same time, When my Wife and I go out to dinner we constantly see yutes sitting at Tables texting back and forth because they literally can not formulate sentences and carry on conversations with each other or with anyone. I own my own business and am fairly successful, in the last 2-3 years I have been offered Jobs by some of customers to TALK ON THE PHONE to their customers, and they were willing to pay me $150K-$200K to do it. When I asked why, the answer is the same, None of the Smart College Kids could have a meaningful conversation with their customers and it just pissed off everyone they spoke to. Oh they can text,tweet,email,sign,... but speak in a common language to express their thoughts and concerns to another human, NOT A CHANCE.

Unemployment benefits pay more than these jobs. Change that and people will go back to work. F’ing simple really.

“It’s not just a search at the door, it’s detainment.”

Lol.

At our local (whitopia) Walmart the employees know many of the customers.

The only “detaining at the door” is the Walmart employees talking about their kids activities with customers on the way out the door.

I've noticed a few things at the Fred Meyer store and the fast-food places near me:

1. Apart from the self-service lines, typically only about three of the seven or eight checkout stands are open.
2. I'm seeing more older people working in the store - people who are clearly past retirement age.
3. Security has increased from no guards a few years ago, to a Walmart-style "greeter," to one uniformed security guard, to two uniformed security guards at each door. The guards now check your receipt as you leave the store.
4. About 90% of the fast-food workers are young Hispanics, and many have heavy accents as if they haven't been here long.
5. There has been a dramatic increase in "people of color" in my area over the past 30 years. When I moved out here to the suburbs in 1987, it was probably 85-90% white. Now, it seems to be barely 50% white. The great replacement, indeed.
6. There has been a huge increase in abandoned shopping carts along the street in the past seven or eight years. It used to be that you'd see one every few weeks. At the peak about four years ago, I counted as many as 40 in one three-block stretch. Since then, FM introduced carts with wheels that lock if you try to take them too far from the store, so now I typically see "only" seven or eight carts a day. There has also been a huge increase in roadside trash, including abandoned furniture and other household items. Also, there are usually three or four old RVs parked along the road.

“checking receipts while doing this small talk”

Pretending to check receipts while doing this small talk...

Gotta make the shift supervisor think they are working...

Gee, in 63 my minimum wage job while going to college was $1 per hour as a fill in teller. By that standard today’s part time tellers should be making, on a yearly basis, 40 hrs per week times 52, times 20 ...40K with the pension, vacation, and the year end 10% bonus. There was no medicare deduction and SS was like 3%.

Of course the real wage came five years later for me, $100 a day once a month as an E1.

I wish today’s whinners had something to whine about.

No biggie. There are scads of folks pouring across the southern border, anxious to fill those empty spaces. Oh wait...that’s right! They’re too busy going to the bank to pickup their checks from Uncle Sugar.
