Part of my music course this week is Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, and since I've avoided CRT in my classroom up until this point, we occasionally can have a reasoned discussion as to whether Gershwin was promoting racial stereotypes or positively presenting Gullah culture. Not surprisingly, Belafonte despised P&B as racist, while (surprisingly for me) Maya Angelou believed the opera to be an acceptable portrayal of a Black subculture.

Someday some student is going to get triggered by P&B or something else (such as contrasting Charles Ives and William Grant Still), and that will be the beginning of the end of my teaching career.

I have the Armstrong-Fitgerald recording of Porgy and Bess. I consider their rendition of ‘Summertime’ one of the best tracks ever put on record. I still get chills when Louis sings ‘... one of these mornings, you’re going to rise up singing...’ Good stuff...
