He almost died about 20 years ago, from an abdominal aneurysm. I think I recall that he believed he ruptured it by doing sit-ups to support his diaphragm/singing.
The eye of the beholder I guess. I know several people in their mid 80s that look a lot better.
This reminds me of a bit I heard on the Bob & Tom Show a while back. They were talking about songs that you would never hear at a strip club because it would kill the mood. A listener called in and said “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald “. It was a hands down winner!
‘Sundown’ was Gordon’s biggest hit. I’m surprised by that.. I’d have thought it would be ‘Edmund Fitzgerald’ or ‘If You Could Read My Mind Love.’
I love art. But it doesn’t feed you or warm you. It is what it is.
It feeds your soul and warms your heart.
Without those, you’d waste away anyhow.
I had a relative who traveled to a communist country (I think it was Sarajevo) for the Olympics one year. She said the ‘art’ was appalling, no soul or LIFE to it at all; and almost everyone was alcoholic and seemed to have nothing to live for.
Agree. Those sleigh bells at the end are a nice touch? I had an affair when I was 28 with a young woman who suffered from mental illness, the affair ended badly and I remember listening to this song over and over again crying my eyes out... it was winter. Lightfoot can do that... caution listening to him after a breakup... you might find yourself hitting repeat and going down into the darkness.
Yet you can live a lot longer on alcohol than you can on art. It is what it is.
“ So they can pound a nail and fix your plugged up toilet but they can’t write or sing for crap.‘ <p? I know which more impacts my daily life.
“If You Could Read My Mind” Great recording by Gordy.
“Early Mornin Rain” was always my favorite of his songs.
Put him on the map also. He was already well known in Canada but Judy Collins covering ‘Early Morning Rain’ got him heard all over. She did similarly for Leonard Cohen.
Even Dylan covered it...
Yup. Great version on Self Portrait. And while we’re at it, Judy Collins did an early Dylan cover, “Just Like Tom Thumbs Blues”.

I remember the late 70s and early 80s well. Jobs were few and applicants were many. I was in the Navy during that period and got out in Dec 87 and the job market was still tight in my small town. But then, opportunities were always limited in my home town.
I’m fond of “Seven Island Suite” and “Leaves of Grass”.
Glad he’s still around!
