I have flown by Area 51 many times (outside the boundary)...from student gap to the 70-series ranges. I was always at very low altitude and very high airspeed.

Groom lake was always briefed as a large piece of concrete, suitable for divert if the emergency was severe.

We were told that it may take up to a week to arrange transportation back to Nellis AFB, and we could also expect an extensive debrief by some serious gents in suits.

I don't know any pilots that landed at Groom lake, but I do know some engineers that worked on some very interesting projects there.
