Horowitz: Can there really be a harsh flu season along with coronavirus?
The Blaze ^ | October 16, 2020 | Daniel Horowitz

"Twindemic."

It's the new literary expression of panic being propagated by politicians and public health officials as pretext for continuing the social control measures indefinitely. If you search for the term "twindemic," you will find all sorts of ominous predictions of a "perfect storm" of a raging coronavirus pandemic converging with a harsh flu season to overrun the hospitals and pile up the bodies in the morgues. There's just one problem: We've already had COVID-19 for at least nine months, and we've seen that this virus and the seasonal flu do not proliferate together.

....The numbers are truly remarkable. In Australia, for example, there were just 107 lab-confirmed cases of influenza this past August, as opposed to 61,000 in August 2019. The same dynamic was observed in countries like South Africa, Chile, and Argentina – all countries that get their flu season during the North American summer....

The concept of one respiratory virus boxing out another is not new. A recent study published by immunobiologists at the Yale University School of Medicine found that the H1N1 epidemic in 2009 was cut short in the fall in several European countries by the seasonal rhinovirus spread. "These findings show that one respiratory virus can block infection with another through stimulation of antiviral defences in the airway mucosa, supporting the idea that interference from rhinovirus disrupted the 2009 IAV pandemic in Europe," asserted the four researchers. "These results indicate that viral interference can potentially affect the course of an epidemic, and this possibility should be considered when designing interventions for seasonal influenza epidemics and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic."...

I only got the flu shot in college due to living in close quarters...But if one is prone to the flu or immuno-compromised in any way, probably a good idea to get a flu shot(?) Because getting it PLUS Covid probably doesn’t sound good regardless of how healthy you are.

Given increased precautions against coved-19 like increased hand washing and distancing there should be some decrease in flu I would think.

Maybe one virus kills another.

Or maybe the flue tests are being calibrated not to pick up flu just like the amplification cycles are increased to pick up minute traces of coronasvirus.

My understanding of how bacteria and viruses work is hat they create a favorable environment for themselves which turns out to be unfavorable for another bug.

They also monopolize the food supply.

Both those things together makes it much more difficult for another strain to get established.

So, flu viruses are weaker than rhinoviruses and coronaviruses, or at least have too weak of an army to successfully invade their territories, so to speak?

Hypothetically, what if this year’s flu strain turns out to be a particularly virulent one and deadlier than most, but we never come to know this because coronavirus keeps it at bay?

Australia’s flu season was mild.

Everyone was taking precautions for COVID - hand washing, surface sanitization, masks, etc. Those two things alone will decrease the spread of the flu.

After my transplant, I started wearing surgical masks every winter to prevent myself from catching the flu. Same principle. I don’t predict it being worse.

Actually remarkable low cases in US and globally of seasonal flu. We are only in the 2nd or 3rd week so far..

Your understanding is wrong.

Yes,with a transplant one’s immune system is intentionally weakened.

I know someone who died of the flu 3 days after receiving his flu shot.

Not necessarily weaker.

It’s just that whatever gets a foothold first then sets up conditions that are favorable to it and hostile to others, not to mention already taking the food supply.

Another virus or bacteria then has two obstacles to overcome.

The already established population, and getting enough nutrients to build itself up and establish an environment to itself that is hostile to the one already there.
