New York Movie Theaters Use Marquees to Berate Gov. Andrew Cuomo

The governor won't allow cinemas to reopen even though indoor dining, gyms and other public-facing businesses have been allowed to resume operation. The latest release playing at a New York movie theater? The battle between exhibitors and Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Frustrated exhibitors across New York are using their marquees to send a very public message to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, whose administration has yet to allow cinemas to reopen.

Late this week, the Regal E-Walk in New York City's Times Square installed a new message on its marquee: "48 states have reopened theaters so far. Why not New York, Gov. Cuomo? #ReopenOurCinemasNY."

Joseph Masher, president of the New York chapter of the National Association of Theatre owners, said the Regal E-Walk signage is part of a statewide initiative attempting to bring attention to the issue.

Circuits say they have spent millions of dollars on new protocols addressing safety in the COVID-19 era, yet the Cuomo administration has yet to allow cinemas to flip on the lights in New York even while allowing indoor restaurants, gyms, churches and other public-facing businesses to resume operation...

A Regal movie theater complex here is now temporarily closed. On their marquee, they say they are closed because of what is happening in New York.

And their standard answer is, “It’s for YOUR safety as EVERY life matters!” And yet, the latest CDC number tell us the expected death rates are far lower than originally projected, we know who the vulnerable populations are, (here’s a hint, Cuomo, DON’T put COVID patents into nursing homes), and treatments have become exponentially better in a matter of eight months.

There have been over 16,000 automobile fatalities in then US so far in 2020, with just under 1000 in New York. Yet, there have been no calls to ban cars or close roads as we all understand the inherent risks of driving.

After the first month of the shutdown, the true pandemic became the enormous damage to our economy, to small businesses, to the mental health of millions, etc., that our state and local governments inflicted upon us.

Yes, we are dealing with an infectious virus, but we know more today than we ever did. Let people decide for themselves if they want to go out to movies, to concerts and dinner.

Not everyone voted for these guys. Don’t lump everyone together.

It is the same for California and other Democrat controlled states.

Not everyone voted for these guys.

I'd bet the farm that the owners of that movie theater franchise that put up that marquee in NY city voted for Cuomo. And probably most everyone who worked there did too. And now they're complaining about him? They'll just turn right around and vote for the next democrat quack who comes down the pike too. That's what I meant. They never learn.

I know upstate New Yorkers don't always vote like that, but it's just like here in Cali, the city folks tend to vote for big govt democrats in droves, while the suburban areas vote against them.

Not sure why these cinemas are even fighting to re-open. Movie companies aren’t even releasing anything worthwhile until well into next year and even 2022. Might as well just keep ‘em closed. And for god’s sake reduce the digital price to watch the movie on our own televisions.

I certainly agree. Dem states ARE full of some fine people who vote according to a moral standard. Some cannot possibly relocate and genuinely want the states they love to throw off the bondage of the left. These are the souls who suffer the worst of the worst and still fight on. God bless them. If there is ever a war, I want them on my side.
