Have you ever seen the reality show “The Last Alaskan’s” ?

“In 1980, the U.S. government banned human occupation in the refuge, and only residents in seven permitted cabins are allowed to remain.”

The show is about the 7 families that own the lease on these cabins. One guy died. So, I guess there are now only 6. Pretty interesting show, IMHO. It was quite popular, but for some reason the Discovery Channel canceled it after four seasons.

It has nothing what so ever to do with the area where they want to drill.

Less than one percent of Americans visit Alaska in a year, let alone this little tiny piece of wilderness.

Drill, baby, drill.

This equates to: .0105%.

So the drilling area of ANWR is, to put it another way, apprximately 1/100 of 1 percent of the total area.

"It is a giant, flat tundra swamp. With 140 metric tons of mosquitos."

Lol! So true. I worked up in Prudhoe Bay (Deadhorse) the summer of '84 and was just amazed at the mosquito population up there. Regular 'OFF repellant' didn't phase them. Only the high DEET concentration stuff helped.

Nope, never seen it. I just know that the years long hysteria about drilling in a tiny part of ANWR has been way over blown. Of course, I’m waiting for the lawsuits to begin about an unused vast frozen wasteland that would provide jobs and more energy independence.

Caribou reproduce more around pipelines because it’s warmer. Makes them more amorous. That’s what happened when the Alaskan pipeline was built. Enviro nazis had their own cow over what it would do.

IIRC ANWR is about the size of Colorado and the drilling footprint is about the size of Denver.

I am a lumber broker. I know all about the use of a surrogate(the Spotted Owl)to stop logging in the Pacific NW.

The Last Alaskans show is pretty cool. Real salt of the earth types. Subsistence living. One young man even built his log cabin by himself. I do not believe this is a fake reality show, like most others. That is what I like about it.

Seem to remember Uncle Sam drilled one well there, results not released. I believe Chevron was involved.

I'm sorry I missed it. Sounds like a show of real self-made men. A poster above said it is cancelled. Maybe I can find the reruns. Although I enjoy Pawn Stars for the interesting items brought into the shop and the history of them, the interaction between the principles is obviously scripted with the same old boring conflicts.

Other than that, I don't watch reality shows. Of course, the Wife loves "Real Housewives of Who Gives a Shit" as I call it. But hey, she's a chick and gets a kick out of all the bickering. She laughs her rear off watching these privileged divas go at each other.

Or, that barely 3 square miles out of upwards 30,000 square miles.

None of the Dems/Journos have ever been withing 500 miles of ANWR or anywhere in Alaska with the possible exception of Anchorage.

A good number of them probably have never been in the area west of the Mississippi and east of California.

Also the moose and antelope use the pipeline as shelter from the wind and the oil moving through the pipes warms up the area immediately around the pipeline so they huddle around it to keep warm.

I seem to recall that the area to be opened was the size of a postage stamp on a football field.

My uncle’s brother in law lived in Fairbanks for a few years helping with the construction of the pipeline. The tree huggers had a fit over that, claiming the caribou would go extinct. The biggest hazard working on the pipeline is encountering the caribou and moose, they’re so abundant.

“I had read that the federal government has somewhere between 70 and 80 trillion dollars worth of oil on its land.

So what do they do they lease it out? Oil companies pay the federal government?”

Valid question.

The USG offers leases to the highest bidder. The winner of the bid has to abide by all of the environmental ‘stuff (spelled *hit after the ‘s’)’

Royalties are paid to the state and the USG for each barrel produced.

Here in Montana we have a coal tax for each ton of coal mined and sold. It goes into a fund that cannot be tapped without 75% of the state House & Senate agreeing and has to be signed by the governor (small g because the have an @hole gov).

The fund is over 1 billion dollars currently and growing.

This is NOT how Alaska deals with it’s oil royalties, just an example of how much $$$$$$$ is to be generated (WAYYYYYYY more than Montana).

Peace.
