Jim Jones was spooked by this and so sent a van full of assassins to kill him before his plane could take off. It was then that Jones realized that the jig was up and decided that mass suicide was the only way out.
By the way, it was not Kool-Aid but Flavor-Aid that was spiked with the cyanide.
If only law enforcement was able to stop Jones here in the US. They were getting close but a “hero” came to Jones’ rescue. Harvey Milk.
Yes, he had a cult following among the poor and desperate blacks of San Francisco. This was of course encouraged by the Dem politicians, who were stepping all over each other to get their pictures taken with him and some token black person.
I lived in San Francisco during this and I was not in the least surprised when the Jonestown massacre happened.
