Amid nationwide Black Lives Matter protests, riots, looting, and calls to defund the police, a Harvard economist has found that proactive policing saves black lives.
“Defunding the police is not a solution and could cost thousands of black lives,” Roland Fryer told The College Fix in an interview about his latest research.
“I think the streets are talking and we should listen. People are frustrated,” he continued in the email. He sympathizes with frustration at “big racial differences” in educational achievement, life expectancy and “almost every part of life.”
The youngest African-American professor to receive tenure in Harvard history, Fryer uses a data-driven approach on fraught social issues.
He made waves four years ago with his research on use-of-force incidents by race. It found that black suspects were less likely to be shot by police than white suspects.
His new research is similarly controversial in the media. In a Manhattan Institute video late last month, Fryer exclaimed that he encountered an “absolute refusal to grapple with the data” from the media and “insistence” that he should not publicize it.

Defunding the police would cost countless thousands of black JOBS - which is why this won’t happen. Instead, I see a scenario where MORE blacks are hired as cops; in many cities, it is already just a jobs program for them.

This researcher sounds like an honest guy. That in itself is a refreshing thing and I give him a tip of the hat for it.

To continue the honest assessment of things, it must be admitted that some of this is nature and some of it is nurture. In other words, not Whitys fault.

Yes, that’s my first take too. Another professor from Berkley made some astonishing comments and I’m certain many others feel the same way about what’s going on.
But maybe using black lives is just a front for their true feelings. Maybe if the cops are all gone they will actually be fearing more for their own lives than a black person. These dudes are mostly hard core left. If the cops all get canned or quit, who will protect them? Many will realize these jerks helped to create the mess we are in, and those professors know this. They know many that own guns are fed up waiting for CWII, and these clowns will be targets.

I’m guessing that abortion mills are in larger cities where the clients are. There is a PP office near me that it’s in a suburban neighborhood.
I wonder if Fryer ever considered that those “big racial differences” are due to behavior and not racism. Somehow, I doubt it. After all, if millions of legal and illegal immigrants of all races can come here and do well, the black underclass should be able to as well.
I agree. We need to read between the lines on these issues. I suggested in another thread two weeks ago that maybe black police officers should patrol black neighborhoods-that way, when a perp gets ventilated, BLM/Left won’t be able to blame whitey. It also occurred to me that a side effect of these protests could just be a jobs program for “minority” officers.
That is an issue here in NJ because the bankrupt cities can’t pay for their own services anymore. Camden NJ was touted as a city that “disbanded its police force” - but they actually just turned over law enforcement to the county. Now the county foots the bill, but the county hires the cops - and Camden’s law enforcement today is more white than it was before.
Given that the county is larger than Camden, I would expect there to be more white cops. You are right to say that the experiment in Camden is hardly a defunding. It is more like a small city putting the onus and cost of policing onto a wider area.
OK, what can we defund that will cost thousands of Ivy League graduates’ lives? /ba-dum t’sssh>
That’s right; there isn’t a lack of police presence in Camden. Bergen County in the northeast went the opposite way, and eliminated their county police (putting the responsibilities on local departments). There is just no money left for these massive government workforces here; the taxes are chasing companies out, destroying the tax base.
