I may be wrong, but flying the confederate flag nowadays seems to signal that a person is a Southerner and proud to be one, but not necessarily wanting the return of the confederacy. The same people are proud to be American and fly the American flag too.
When they authorized disrespecting the American Flag, I decided to no longer be a nascar fan.
