Coronavirus “Frontline” Worker ‘Stole Engagement Ring And Credit Cards From Dementia Woman Who Died From Coronavirus’

From my anecdotal experience (just my own relatives), care-provider theft from the dying and recently deceased is endemic and has been for a long, long time. Usually, the value seems to be low enough that families don’t want to make an issue of it at a time when they are grieving.

We can only guess how many elderly Covid-19 victims have been damaged by these so-called”frontline” workers. A caregiver allegedly stole and pawned the engagement ring of an 86-year-old woman with dementia as she lay dying from coronavirus. As Denver Channel reported 29-year-old Aurora woman who was working as a temporary health care worker at the Carillon at Belleview Station care center has been accused of stealing the engagement ring of an 86-year-old woman in memory care and then using her credit cards after she died of COVID-19.

Elizabeth Daniels, 29, is charged with theft from an at-risk person, identity theft, providing a false statement to a pawnbroker and criminal possession of a financial transaction device, according to the Denver District Attorney’s Office.

According to the affidavit, Daniels had been hired as a temporary worker at the facility through a temp agency because of the number of positive cases.

According to the affidavit, Gust’s daughter-in-law called police on April 16 to say her mother-in-law had died the morning before and that she and her husband, along with the funeral home, noticed there had been activity on several of her credit cards after Gust died. Gust had been in the memory care unit at the facility.

Detectives assigned to investigate secured the arrest affidavit for Daniels the same day. They were also able to recover the ring.

Sadly this happens more often than you think, but I’m so glad they caught this one.

I'm sure this happens far more than anyone knows. This virus is forcing the public to learn about conditions in these facilities. They are understaffed, underpaid, and filthy in many cases. People are just happy to dump their "loved ones" off.

We didn’t dump my grandmother on anyone but took care of her ourselves ... and one nurse they sent in to help still robbed us. Never trust, never turn your back.

Years ago we had a family who was famous for just dropping grandma off at the ER and then leaving town for a week or two. They would literally drop her at the door sitting on her suitcase. Try to justify that admission for the RVUs.

My mother “lost” both of her wedding rings the first week that she went into memory care. We never found out if it was a resident or a worker.

One caregiver of a friend of mine stole a couple of vials of morphine (I assume to sell). Out of ten doses provided, two turned up missing.

He also appeared to be casing the home for other valuables (rings).

When our mother was in a nursing home after a stroke, she developed the obvious problems (bedsores mainly) typical of poor care and attention of nursing home staff - and it was not a cheap facility either.

At that point my sister, God bless her, (and who has nursing skills) could not stand seeing this, and took the personal decision to bring Mom home, and put her own career and life on hold, to care for her. We all supported her as much as possible. Sis will always have my deepest respect and debt for that. At least mom passed at home, in her own bed, with the best care in the world possible.

Have you ever heard the comedy routine that posits going a a cruise ship for the rest of you life is a better and more affordable option than a rest home?

Maybe it isn’t hard to find those who prey upon the elderly because it’s just another line to cross?

The sad truth is that family members are often as bad as the hired help.

Well known to ER nurses, it is called a “granny dump”. Just take granny to the ER and describe some mental health symptoms which require a 48- hour psych hold. There are many variations. Mostly happens on Friday afternoons, for some reason...
