‘Ok math WHIZ’: William Shatner takes troll apart with simple math (TR)

William Shatner is one of our very favorite accounts on Twitter mainly because he just sort of hangs out with normal, everyday people which usually leads to him slapping trolls around.

You know, like the rest of us.

He’s not focused on pushing some social justice movement or complaining about Trump like other celebrities … nope. Usually, he’s talking about various projects he’s working on while schooling ‘younguns’ about this or that. For example:

Ok math whiz: a $85k 30 year mortgage with 12% interest in 1985 actual total cost was $315k.

A $315k 30 yr mortgage today at 3.8% is $525k total.

$315,000 in 1985 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $751,664.36 in 2019.

So it’s cheaper today to buy a median price home🤷🏼‍♂️

The median mortgage rate in 85 was 12% and the median home value was 85k which is 200k in today's money. The median home price today is 315k. Math is discriminatory, wayciss and gender normative. How can you decide 1+1 isn’t 3??

1985 median income: 22,415
2018 median income: 63,179

85k loan, 20% down, 12.0% interest = principle/interest of 699/mo

315k loan, 20% down, 3.8% interest = principle/interest of 1174/mo

P&I in 1985 consumed 37.4% of gross income
P&I in 2018 consumed 22.3% of gross income

yea, it is so much harder today

DeShawn pimps fo hos. If the price is one Benjamin per trick, how many tricks per day must each ho turn to support DeShawn’s $800 per day crack habit?

In the service of oversharing, William Shatner was my first childhood crush. Here I am, 50 years later, still crushing on the man.

The fellow citing his 21% mortgage said “mid-80s”. That would be more like very early (Carter) 80s, as in 1979-early 1981. The respondent used 1985 (post-Reagan reelection) and got a bad number off of it. Even with the difference, the Shat comes through again.

He doesn’t take himself so seriously, which is a good thing in this day and age.

That's Math 101. In Math 102, we have more advanced Math.

DeShawn misses a payment. At an interest rate of 50% per diem, how many tricks must his hos make to keep DeShawn's legs intact?

I got a VA mortgage in 1985 at 12.5% and was grateful to get it.

Around 69, I saw Shatner in a one-man show at ASU. He did 2 hours of dramatic readings like “Galilep” & “Cyrano” interspersed with anecdotes about Star Trek. He is an excellent actor and it was a great show.

I got a 11% VA loan in ‘82. I converted into a 5% loan later on. I paid the 30 year mortgage off in 15 even though when I took it I was at the maximum allowable loan at the time. I would add a little extra money each month when I could afford it. I bought the house when I was 35 and paid it off when I was 50. It is worth 6 times what I paid for it. I’m retired with no mortgage. Is a reverse mortgage in my future? Probably won’t need it, but my kid’s will benefit.

Always been a Shat fan. Everyone who has worked with him said he was vain and thin-skinned in his younger, prime days. But, as he’s gotten comfortably into his geezerhood now, apparently he’s decided to have some fun with his own stereotype. And man, has it ever paid off for him.
