Ex-Energy Minister Proposes Controversial Carbon Pawprint Tax

A former Australian energy and resources minister has proposed a carbon tax for pets—an idea that is as rational as it will no doubt be controversial.

“They might be furry and they might be cute, but they do have a carbon footprint and an environmental cost,” former minister Theo Theophanus told Australian 3AW693.

“Everybody wants us to address the climate issue, but they don’t want to address it personally and in their own use of resources on the planet,” he added, saying a carbon tax on pets could raise between US$68 and US$103 million (A$100-150 million).

While Theophanus’s proposal would certainly sound heartless to anyone who has ever owned a pet, he does have a point. Like people, cats and dogs—and other pets as well—also have a carbon pawprint.

Just imagine the outrage from cat ladies!

But if you buy the whole “carbon tax” bs, this is entirely rational.

What is this “carbon footprint” of which these “environmentalists” speak? I see it as no more than existing and living in the world, is this now to be forbidden? And on what authority is this decision made for everybody and everything else?

The correct response is to adapt to changing conditions, be it climate, or salinity of the ocean, or the color of the sky. There are no immutable conditions in the Universe, and at every point since life has arisen on this planet, there has been environmental change on an ongoing basis.

Earth was not created with an atmosphere consisting of some 21% oxygen and 78% nitrogen, with variable amounts of water vapor in the air, and carbon dioxide making up just 0.04% of that total. The original atmosphere was very heavy on ammonia (NH3) and vastly higher concentrations of CO2. Only when life forms developed that would liberate the free oxygen from carbon dioxide and free nitrogen from ammonia, did the current composition of the atmosphere begin to develop. Water vapor we have had all along, but the quantity was vastly increased when the hydrogen was released from the ammonia and combined with the now free oxygen, enough so it fell to earth and formed our lakes, rivers and oceans.

There is no “perfect” balance of nature. The balance is ever changing, and the organisms affected either adapt, or die out. The Universe is a harsh and merciless place.

Don’t endangered species have a carbon footprint too?

I’ve said for 15 years that if they can convince us that CO2 is a bad thing, they can control every aspect of our life, since everything we do emits CO2.

And here we are. Even the pets.

Theo Theophanus is a socialist leaning member of Australia's Center-left Labor/Labour Party.

Like many on that side of the political street, there has never been a tax that they did not like!

One, two, three, four
One, two... (One, two, three, four)

Let me tell you how it will be
There’s one for you, nineteen for me

‘Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman

Should five percent appear too small
Be thankful I don’t take it all

‘Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman

If you drive a car, car, I’ll tax the street
If you try to sit, sit, I’ll tax your seat
If you get too cold, cold, I’ll tax the heat
If you take a walk, walk, I’ll tax your feet

Taxman

‘Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman

Don’t ask me what I want it for
(Haha, Mr. Wilson)
If you don’t want to pay some more
(Haha, Mr. Heath)

‘Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman

Now my advice for those who die
(Taxman!)
Declare the pennies on your eyes
(Taxman!)

Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman

Taxman
