Facebook Needs a New “A” For Effort Key

There are so many things wrong with this story - “He went underwater to propose to his girlfriend, but he didn't live to hear her say ‘yes’” - and all of them are related to social media.

Steven Weber died during a marriage proposal in Tanzania, his family says. Photo: Kenesha Antoine Via Facebook

Before Facebook/Twitter/Instagram reduced all significant life events to the ubiquitous selfie and/or video clip it might have been sufficient to take your girlfriend to a $1700/night resort, where you booked a glass room submerged 30 feet below water, to propose. But then, I’m so old that I remember when that trip wouldn’t have happened until after the wedding so what do I know?

But now in order to amp up the Facebook likes on your awesome proposal you have to do a 30 foot free dive with the ring and proposal for your girlfriend to video. Too bad you don’t make it back atop alive. At least your intended will always have the video to remember you by.

If you think I’m being harsh and unfeeling I refer you to Kenisha Antoine’s Facebook page where she posted the entire ill-fated proposal posthumously. Honestly, I can’t wrap my head around this new style public celebration and mourning. Nor can I comprehend clicking the “like” button on such a post but what else do you do?

Facebook doesn’t have an “A” for effort, “F” for execution key.

How did he fail to make it back up and out? He didn’t hit bottom and he showed his letter and ring in the posted video.

Eaten by a shark?
Out of air?

Yep.

From the pics, it doesn’t look like that deep of a dive but obviously this guy was underwater too long.

From what I saw, he shows the note, presses it against the glass, flips it over, presses that against the glass and then pulls the ring box from his pocket.

Facebook must be officially declared a communications network--like a telephone company--which it is--unable to censor communications.

Another third-world shithole with beautiful scenery that westerners are so fond of. I’d sooner live in Philadelphia ... and that’s saying a lot.

Someone can afford plane tickets, a $1700 a night room, wedding ring, etc but doesn’t have sufficient funds or insurance to get the body home or buried?

Most professionals’ employers offer at least a basic life insurance policy for all employees (at 1x pay) in the benefits package (with option to buy additional coverage).

Check the video. His hand is shaking while he holds that ring box. I think some are calling it, potentially, shallow-water blackout.

and lifeguards couldn’t save him right as he drown for staying under water too long while people were watching his antics?

If he dived in, can any guests swim around your room’s portholes? Did he circumvent some kind of gate?

The “room” is tethered in the bay, it looks like.

Nobody around you - lights on the outside by each window.

He was near the top of the window but that still looks 6-8 feet down at least.

There’s a good pic in the center here:

I will never understand why any proposal has to be a public thing. It’s a special intimate moment beteeen 2 and only 2 people. It’s like the parent child stuff... every little moment beteeen you and a child doesn’t and shouldn’t need to be shared with the world...or anyone but your wife or husband.

Holding his breath for too long is making him tremble?

Can’t tell what happened after he left to go to the surface.

I think CNN (oy) said the local police confirmed a death had occurred there.

I guess they wanted the video to go viral. Well, it has now.

Ouch. BBL.

Exactly. Shallow water blackout. On the way up your body is actually losing oxygen to your airway.

There are a lot of stories about it in the news today. My own theory is that he held his breath for longer than he was used to and reflexively took a breath as soon as his head reached the surface. At that point he probably either got water into his lungs or had a “laryngospasm” which blocked his airway when he was already low on oxygen and he lost consciousness. With drowning victims its about 50/50. Half of the people who “drown” don’t have much if any water in their lungs.

My crew and I once responded to bicyclist who got hit by a truck and landed face down in a puddle on the shoulder of the road that was about 6 inches deep. There were lots of witnesses but they were afraid of moving him because they thought that he might have a neck injury.

He still had a pulse when we and the paramedics got there but he was not breathing. He didn’t have any water in his lungs because he had a strong laryngospasm, but the paramedics were not able to get their airway tube past it in time to save him. I am not sure if the idiots who put a blanket over him while he was laying face down in a puddle of water could have saved him either, but it sure made us wonder about their common sense.
