A South African court has partially banned flying the country's apartheid-era national flag, saying such display amounted to "hate speech" and "harassment".
Wednesday's landmark ruling in South Africa's Equality Court in Johannesburg barred the so-called "apartheid flag" - comprised of three stripes of orange, white and blue with the emblems of Britain, the Orange Free State and the South African Republic at its centre - from being displayed except for academic, artistic or journalistic purposes.

How many of the people in that picture have had their farmland and houses confiscated, their wives or daughters raped and killed or been shot in carjackings since that picture was taken?

Not granting them asylum is just insane. These are some of the hardest working people around. A memoir I recommend is, “Don’t Let’s go to the Dogs Tonight.” The work ethic (as well as the partying ethic ; ) left me exhausted.
A dream has always been to visit wine country in South Africa. But I also don’t want to die a terrible death, so there’s that. Violent people ruin so many lives.
So they can only half display it?

Are flags that are not actual apartheid-era national flags but just look vaguely similar to apartheid-era national flags banned?

Not likely. As of a couple years ago one had to have a certain shade of skin color to be considered for pilot duty.
Last time I was in SA I unofficially observed several SA bases. No activity of any kind. The military now is just a political and welfare organization and its leaders were trained in Cuba and USSR during the cold war. There is no chance they could defend themselves against a co-ed boy scout troop.
Our meddling was of no benefit to any SA citizen. The government has no hope of ever overcoming its malfeasance, corruption, and ignorance. Pity.
