“...the Bannon film I linked earlier shows....the CCP may be gone in several months.”

Funny how a year old video can suddenly foretell an event coming in few months.

I remember when banners declaring 'Made in America' were proudly displayed at Wal Mart. Sam Walton was the driving force behind that philosophy. When he died and his sons took over, all that changed. Incrementally at first, but then 'Normalization of trade' with China was passed by D.C. effectively removing them from our enemies list and it all accelerated. All in the 90s. Don't you know a lot of palms were greased to get that done and a lot of blind eyes were turned from the communist abuse of human rights.

We were sold down the river in the 90s and the pols did it. BOTH parties were neck deep in fast tracking the trade deals; GATT, NAFTA and the Normalization of Trade w/the chicoms.

Not to mention how the Clintons sold America's secrets to the chicoms. Sandy Burglar taking out top secret info, in his pants (with no repercussions btw) and allowing Chinese officials to actually 'visit' our military installations (all in the name of peace dontchya know).

Trump knows all of this and is finally addressing it. We just have to hang tough and ignore the screaming of the stuck pigs on the left.

Question:

What is with all the saber-rattling regarding tariffs? Why are tariffs now considered bad?

Our nation functioned on NO income taxes (was not allowed by the Constitution until the 16th Amendment was “ratified” - there is some legitimate grumbling about whether it was actually legally ratified... but that is another discussion). We didn’t have massive oppressive debt (and we didn’t’ fight seemingly never-ending wars).

The Founding Fathers saw fit to implement tariffs as the primary funding source for the Federal Government. Then again, the most “liberal” of them saw a FAR more limited government than anything we have today.

So - again, why are “tariffs” now a bad word? Is it because they add cost ON TOP of our already egregious set of taxes from income and inheritance, to sales and property taxes (another completely immoral taxing concept)?

We couldn’t survive on our income without the WalMart superstore just down the block and its great pricing. It stocks many products made in the U.S or at least not from China or Mexico. You just need to be aware and take the time to check.

Exactly - I am EXTREMELY conscious of the country of origin of nearly everything I purchase. Oer the last few decades, I have seen a rapidly growing list of actual necessities that are just plain no longer made in the USA, no matter where you buy them.

I’ve never understood how it can actually be so profitable to manufacture a $1 thing - that costs maybe 2 cents less to make in China than the US (after all manufacturing costs are figured). And there is additional transportation costs bringing them here from across the Pacific.

I would personally have no issue paying a little more for a US-made product vs a Chinese made product. If that extra 2% or 5% actually means there is another American with a job (and paying taxes, not sucking from them).

Why single out Walmart? If you buy the same thing in another store you think it’s not Made in China?

Not only China, though I’ve been aware for quite some time, of the stores that “specialize” in favor of Chinese produced products.

I’ve even made a concerted effort to discontinue purchases and even entire stores (The Dollar Store, Dollar General, etc.) from places to shop, though I’m keenly aware, many if not most companies actively chose to manufacture in that country, which products, besides being inferior to begin with, put our fellow Americans out of a job, in fact, entire companies no longer can afford to exist, thanks to the Chinese Military-run country!

Having met and conversed with a former Chinese prisoner, I met after his release from prison, who enlightened me to understand that when I saw any businessman in a suit and tie, was really wearing his Chinese military uniform underneath his suit!

He said I needed to understand by my purchasing goods made there, no matter which product, I was really building up the very military and generals who one day intend to own our entire country, under the guise of “trade!”

As that conversation took place almost 20 years ago now, I am often reminded what Harry Wu told me then!

I might add that I refuse to purchase any food product grown or processed in Mexico to protect my heather well!

technically, “typing paper” is a different product than copy paper. I remember far-too-many years ago in typing class - we had to purchase on our school supply list “typing paper” - and copy paper was not a substitute. Typing paper back then was almost like parchment in texture.

The year after I moved to the next grade, they upgraded that typing classroom to actual ELECTRIC typewriters! NO more manual returns! LOL

So what grasshoppa? If China shoots itself in the foot does that mean we have to also? It doesn’t matter what China does. It only matters what we do.

The voluntary cooperation between buyers and sellers in the open competition of the marketplace free from government interference will sort out the good, the bad, and the ugly. Government just gums up the works.

There may be other reasons for imposing tariffs. Tariffs imposed to protect industries essential to national defense are totally justified. With advances made in weapons of war a nation has a reduced time frame to ramp up production of items such steel for armor or rare earth metals for magnets.

And how does out of control Federal spending and the ever increasing National Debt ( $15 trillion or is it $21 trillion?) factor into this analysis?

Have you noticed (and this is especially true for the brands at Walmart) - how many FOOD are now coming here from China? Even something as simple as canned mushrooms... “MADE IN CHINA”... Several fruits, lots of seafood... other canned vegetables...

Bona-fide military justification may be a reason, but then probably not tariff, just a ban based on bona-fide imminent threat for the importing nation.

Another valid purpose for tariffs is government revenue which is exactly what tariffs are - a tax.

A fledgling country like we were in 1776 needs protective tariffs. But we are not a fledgling country. We are the most powerful country in the world. But many of our citizens have become lazy and want to government to bail us out - but our own federal government is our greatest threat.

Freedom has no guarantees except one - do what you want without government interference - it takes FAITH to be FREE. If you want guarantees, Sanders has a Socialist State he’d like to sell you. Problem is, they will never deliver on their guarantees except to take over our lives and take our money.

China can SHOVE IT!

************

I’m sure they are trying. People may not like the economics but
things change in the world and have every since the beginning. Just
look at this land called the United States of America and what has
occurred since Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Life keeps moving
and changes will be a part of it before, during and after out alloted
time on it.

You are so absolutist you probably think child porn is protected by the first amendment.

China’s CCP economic manipulation has damaged our business environment, granted at a cost to them, but what choice do their people have? They are slaves. Get a clue. Child porn is not protected under the 1st amendment.

The Lenovo bit is extremely misleading - I have actually tried to find a computer (Lenovo branded) that even bothers to label it as “Made in USA” and have yet to find one. They ALL say China on the box (that I have been able to find). But to give the benefit of the doubt - they MIGHT assemble some in the US - but guess where nearly all the bits and parts come from... So it’s a bit misleading.

There is a MAJOR US commercial/office/school furniture manufacturer a very close friend worked for back in the early 90’s - They had one whole large building with lines that their entire job was to unbox office chairs that were imported, slap a “MADE IN USA” sticker on them, and repackage them... There was absolutely NOTHING on the chair made or even assembled in the USA. My friend got fired for basically asking the obvious question about this practice...

As to the headstone granite - I suppose the market makes a big difference - when MY Father In Law passed away back in 2011, my MIL was looking at headstones - and the China-imported stone was almost half the price of the US stone. I don’t know if the US stone was just that far over-priced, or the imported stone was that far under-priced (or both). If only $50 difference - there would be no question about what stone I would want!

And what does it say when there are several Korean, Japanese, and European automakers who’s products are more “Made in USA” than many of our own “Big Three” vehicles?

Simple but not easy: Dismantle the 80%+ unconstitutional portion of the federal government. “National Debt” and government spending will disappear overnight as any kind of meaningful problem or issue.

Our greatest threat is the totalitarian power our federal government has assumed for itself regardless of the Constitution which does not authorize such.

The Constitution represents our land as Ruled by Law (the Constitution). The Left stands for Rule by Man - the tyranny we continue to experience increasingly at home.

Do you have business interests in China?

I can assure you that I do not have any business interests in China--I don't even eat Chinese food made in America.

But I can certainly assure that I believe that Jim 0216 has every right to make his comments without someone (such as yourself) trying to intimidate him.

I thought that free speech in America is what FreeRepublic is all about.
