Pre-Existing Conditions: Fix Them or Eliminate Them Altogether?
The Houston Courant ^ | October 29, 2018 | David Balat

Posted on 08/27/2019 3:36:15 PM PDT by The Houston Courant

Healthcare is the single biggest issue affecting voters this election cycle. Understandably, the crown jewel of political debate during the campaigns is the aspect of the ACA that protects consumers from limitations associated with pre-existing conditions.

The ACA, or Obamacare, provided for those in the individual markets to have the same benefits of those participating in group insurance without fear of their past medical history preventing them from participating. The multiple attempts to repeal or change this hotly debated law has caused the issue of pre-existing condition repeal to come to the forefront of the discussions related to healthcare.

They cannot be eliminated. Patently ridiculous.

If you get to buy the insurance after you have the wreck it’s not insurance, it’s welfare.

“Healthcare is the single biggest issue affecting voters this election cycle.”

Wrong.

I'm 500#, I cannot work do to my weight. I cannot afford health insurance. Do you really want to do nothing and just let me die? I am an american.

what are the alternatives to the ACA for me ?

Convince me I don't deserve basic health care.

this post is facticious, but not far fetched.

How do you justify forcing others (via government mandate) to pay for your healthcare ? How is that moral ?

Every single American has something that qualifies as pre-existing, I am betting.

Insurance covering existing conditions is simply cost-shifting not insurance.

You have every right to Walk into your doctors office or hospital and whip out CASH to pay for their Services, just Like I do!!! I should not be forced to pay for your Personal Choices that mad you Obese and Unhealthy. I believe in Darwin, suck it up and enjoy the consequences of your actions.

NOT a Fictitious Answer!

Why not separate “pre-existing conditions” from regular healthcare and provide for separate packages.

One for regular healthcare, and one for pre-existing conditions. Not everybody is affected by pre-existing conditions, and perhaps that’s where “government assistance” can help cover the costs. “Regular” and non-tragic medical cases can be covered by ‘regular insurance’. Perhaps there should be a third classification for ‘tragic’ or massively-costly medical cases, such as cancer and multiple sclerosis and other such ‘not normal and not every day’ illnesses.

The Point IS that insurance is intended to be purchased BEFORE a heath problem.

(Don’t even think about going there with me, I smashed my femur skiing once and spent weeks in the hospital — all without insurance — and I paid ALL my bills off without insurance...)

Why is your obesity MY problem and responsibility?

Enlighten me, I’m an American, too.

It is electoral suicide for any politician who supports eliminating insurance coverage of pre-existing conditions.

It’s not insurance, it’s a pre-existing claim.

My father died in 1979. I know that was a long time ago, but I could use some money now. I’d like to buy a life insurance policy on my dad, and I don’t think his preexisting condition should stand in the way.

Yep. A broken bone in childhood develops a problem in adulthood. How many Americans qualify as obese? Millions are dependent on thyroid meds but any med for anything before this insurance app is based on something pre-existing. Had a backache 5 yrs ago and now you have another?
It’s ridiculous to even try to say no to pre-existing conditions.

Let’s talk about your family’s responsibility to you, and your personal responsibility to reduce your weight, before talking about your right to force society to pay for your health insurance.

Eliminate pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes and poor diet choices, and we probably reduce health costs by HALF. The level of obesity here is shocking, scandalous. It is a national emergency, if there ever was one. I am not sure how to solve it, because any government intervention will be twisted and the money re-directed away from real health into social engineering on one hand, and profiteering on the other.
