I attended the University of Oklahoma in my youth, circa 1972. My girlfriend, now my wife, and I walked around a lot at night. We encountered a “Free Huey” poster on the door to the Black Student Union offices. There was nobody home.
Being a good engineering student, I had a pencil in my shirt pocket. I could not resist the urge to engage in graffiti. But being respectful of private property, I used a pencil, I wrote on the border of the poster, I wrote light enough that it could be easily erased.
“Prunes will set him free!”
Even though it was lightly written, it was clearly visible. They must have had a sense of humor (hard to believe!). When we came back the following week, my message was still there.
Prunes will set him free?
Why prunes?
Was that a slogan for some prune company?
