MOSCOW – Protesters have torn down a towering bust of Soviet military hero Marshal Georgy Zhukov in Ukraine's second-largest city.
Destruction of the monument in Kharkiv on Sunday came amid protests by an array of far-right and nationalist groups against an organizing session for a new political party. The party is led by the mayors of Kharkiv and Odesa, both of whom were members of the party of Viktor Yanukovych, the pro-Russia president ousted amid bloody protests in 2014.
The protesters said the bust violated Ukraine's law banning Communist symbols. A crowd of hundreds cheered as protesters tugged on a cord around the bust and it toppled off a high plinth.
Zhukov commanded the Red Army forces in the final assault on Berlin in World War II.

Ukraine is the first country outside Israel, that has elected a Jewish President and a Jewish Prime minister. That Jewish President was elected by 73% of the vote.

There was a plan to get along and finish the Cold War between Ike and Khruschev but it was derailed by the U-2 event.

If you ask any Tunisian they all love Jews and Israel but for some strange reason there are only a few hundred Jews left in Tunisia according to census before Hillary’s Arab Spring. That is out of hundreds of thousands living there under the French authority in 1900. Probably none by now.

You’d think they would have learned from Stalingrad that bombing cities to rubble actually makes it more difficult to take the city, it becomes a fortress, and difficult for tanks to maneuver in.

In no way Zhukov was a Western-style military leader but situations you have described weren’t so common.
Also Zhukov was a subject of both Stalinist and Khruschev’s propaganda aimed to taint his popularity. He was generally portrayed as a sort of Napoleon and un-Soviet. The media once in a while relayed witness on him abusing troops or stealing war loot in Germany but it never progressed into something serious.
One grandfather had fought and survived WWII. When staying with his grandparents he said they were sometimes awakened by his screams in the night. One time they found him cowering on top of an armoire muttering that the German tanks were coming.
The Soviets executed more than 158,000 soldiers for desertion in WW II.

The Poles I know are bitter about German atrocities, but respect the Germans for their cultural, scientific and economic achievements. For the Russians they have nothing but unbridled contempt.

Bet they said the same to the Germans in 1941. And the same to the Russians again in 1944. Solzhenitzyn mentioned that there was one thing in common in Stalin’s and Nazi camps. You were guarded by the Ukrainians.
It is really stunning how they are always capable to assemble in a group of a million people to violently deny something and then in a short period of time again denouncing the very same thing and praising what they were against the first time. And if you ask them they say they ALWAYS held the same position on the subject and they don’t even know anyone who didn’t.
That is one extremist opportunism.

I suppose the people that tore it down do not consider Ukraine part of Russian soil.
This of course is nonsense, but I ran into a similar case with a Croat I used to know.
In his apartment he had two photos next to each other on his shelf: Pope John Paul II and Anton Pavelic.
Quite a juxtaposition, eh? When your country - and people- only earned their independence (or tried to) with such bastards as Bandera or Pavelic the situation is somewhat complicated, and people believe what they want to believe.
My impression when I was there (and from reading reports about it) was that local Poles were well treated, so much so that some Polish families expelled from Lviv were returning. My ears also told me that the local Ukrainian dialect was very close to Polish anyway, and when I used my very limited Polish vocabulary it was understood immediately.
