MOSCOW – Protesters have torn down a towering bust of Soviet military hero Marshal Georgy Zhukov in Ukraine's second-largest city.
Destruction of the monument in Kharkiv on Sunday came amid protests by an array of far-right and nationalist groups against an organizing session for a new political party. The party is led by the mayors of Kharkiv and Odesa, both of whom were members of the party of Viktor Yanukovych, the pro-Russia president ousted amid bloody protests in 2014.
The protesters said the bust violated Ukraine's law banning Communist symbols. A crowd of hundreds cheered as protesters tugged on a cord around the bust and it toppled off a high plinth.
Zhukov commanded the Red Army forces in the final assault on Berlin in World War II.

This doesn’t make a lot of sense. Berlin was the last battle of the war against Hitler.
Since when Nazis are making sense? That’s temper tantrums.
Zhukov is known for being a damn good commander and beating the Nazis. Not for being a communist.
He joined the Communist party during the revolution and was a politburo member later in his life.
If you research his personality he was an extremely poor Communist ideologically speaking.
Stalin has merely tolerated him due to Zhukov’s popularity with both military and average folks and Khruschev because he was valuable in defeating Stalin’s minions after the latter croacked. It hasn’t stopped Khruschev from screwing Zhukov once Stalinists weren’t a threat anymore.
Zhukov. The same guy that was the most successful commander of the Russian army. The guy that actually took it to Hitler and was behind every push into Germany. The guy that removed NAZI’s from Russian soil. The guy that Stalin feared because he was so popular from his wartime success, that he gave him a nothing job to hide him from the public.
People of today refuse to learn history, so they act like kids and tear down a statue of a real hero. We are all just a little more stupid and blind, as a human race, whenever people act like this.
They are tearing down a statue glorifying a leader of an evil genocidal regime.
Nazism is on the rise in Ukraine and has been since 2014.

Zukov was the best that Russia had, but like all Russian commanders was very spendthrift with men. Yes he took Berlin, but spent a million casualties to do it.
It would appear to me that most here do not understand the internal dynamics of Eastern European states.

Ukraine’s parliament has officially designated the birthday of a prominent Nazi collaborator as a national holiday, while also banning a book that criticized another anti-Semitic national leader.
January 1 has now been set aside in the country to remember Stepan Bandera, the Jewish Telegraph Agency reported Thursday. Bandera was a Ukrainian nationalist who joined forces with the German Nazis during World War II because he believed that they would help his country gain independence from the now defunct Soviet Union. However, he was later also targeted and arrested by the Nazis.
The Ukrainian city of Lviv, which was the nationalist’s home city, also announced this month that next year would be “Stepan Bandera Year,” a move criticized by Israel.
Earlier in December, Ukraine’s State Committee on Television and Radio Broadcasting banned Swedish historian Anders Rydell’s Book of Thieves. The book critically analyzed the actions of Ukrainian nationalist Symon Petliura, whose forces killed large numbers of Jews in the early 20th century. Petilura was later killed by a Russian-born Jew in Paris in 1929.
On December 17, Ukraine voted against a United Nations General Assembly resolution that aimed to combat the “glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to fuelling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance,” according to Tass news agency. The United States also voted against the measure, although 129 nations supported the move.
The resolution was put forward by Russia. Nikolai Patrushev, secretary of the Russian Security Council slammed Ukraine and the U.S. for their opposition.
“The decision of the United States and Ukraine to vote against the Russia-initiated resolution is within the frames of these countries’ strategy of using neo-Nazi and ultra-right forces in their own political interests,” Patrushev said, Tass reported.
Human rights activists have raised serious concerns about the rise of neo-Nazi groups in Ukraine, particularly since Russian-backed separatist rebels took control of sizable portions of the country in 2014. The conflict has led to an increase in anti-Russian sentiments and ultra-nationalist feelings. Some of the nationalists have turned to neo-Nazi ideology as well.
In July, activists even filed a petition with Israel’s High Court of Justice, demanding their country halt arms exports to Ukraine, Haaretz reported. Their petition argued that many of the weapons ended up in the hands of fighters who promoted neo-Nazi views.
“Numerous organized radical right-wing groups exist in Ukraine,” Freedom House’s Ukraine project director Matthew Schaaf said, according to a March report by Reuters. “While the volunteer battalions may have been officially integrated into state structures, some of them have since spun off political and non-profit structures to implement their vision.”
The 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Galician) prior to 1944 titled the 14th SS-Volunteer Division was a World War II German military formation made up predominantly of military volunteers with a Ukrainian ethnic background from the area of Galicia,[3] later also with some Slovaks and Czechs.[3][4] Formed in 1943, it was largely destroyed in the battle of Brody, reformed, and saw action in Slovakia, Yugoslavia and Austria before being renamed the first division of the Ukrainian National Army and surrendering to the Western Allies by 10 May 1945.

Recalling the times of the World War II, the speaker noted that the Ukrainian nationalists behaved much worse than the army of Hitler. “They sought to show the Germans that the Ukrainian nationalists are actually more Germans than the Germans themselves. Again, we return to the fact that those who do not take into account the lessons of history are doomed to go through it again. Why is Europe celebrating Auschwitz’s liberation tomorrow? Because it honors the victory over the plague of the 20th century. And it starts to raise the head again. The fascists were always present in Italy and they were marginalized - they were at the government several times and gradually this happens throughout Europe under the pretext of populism, under the pretext “against Jewish Freemasonry” that “captured” the EU, Bernardini said.
