Harry Byrd, Sr. was my boyhood model for all that a U.S. Senator should be. Because he was pretty clearly the most Conservative Senator from the 1930s until he left the Senate in the mid 1960s, i considered myself a Harry Byrd Democrat, until I joined the Republican Party to support Barry Goldwater in 1964.

Harry Sr. was succeeded by his son, Harry Byrd, Jr. who I believe liked my review better--a lot better--than the book reviewed.

On the subject of Churchll? He was certainly a great man, but basically a patriotic "Liberal," as was Joseph Chamberlain in the pre-World War I era.
