Top 10 Characteristics And Components Of A Defensive AR-15
The Federalist ^ | January 30, 2019 | Mark Overstreet

Posted on 01/30/2019 6:35:42 AM PST by Travis McGee

The best AR-15s cost less now than the cheapest ones will, if the Democrats’ gun-ban legislation gains steam.

After I suggested reasons to own AR-15s and to fight Democrats’ new attempt to ban them, some readers wrote to request recommendations for the best AR-15s to have and the best ways to equip them. Because self-defense is the primary reason Americans buy guns, including a million AR-15s every year, here are, I believe, the top 10 characteristics of AR-15s configured for defensive purposes and the top 10 components they should have.

Top 10 Characteristics 1. Caliber

U.S. Special Operations Command will soon field rifles in 6.5mm Creedmore, a caliber already in use by the armed citizenry, and the Army is considering a new 6.8mm cartridge. However, for now, an AR-15 should be chambered for 5.56mm NATO because of the variety and availability of ammunition in that caliber. (Note: A 5.56mm AR-15 can also use lower-pressure .223 Remington cartridges, but not vice versa.)

It's amazing that this article on AR-15s is appearing today in a political site like The Federalist.

Post the Covington event, I think that we are all staring at the prospect of some type of civil war.

Not a bad article. I cant ‘disagree’ with it, but I think there are additional schools of thought that have been left out. Its hard to fully cover a topic this broad in the length of the given article. For example, for the AR platform, I am a proponent of single point slings, and the article implies a two point sling is essential. Should have just said a sling was essential, and qualified that for when its not appropriate to have a sling.

Terrific article. Disagree, though, with “never use reloads for defensive purposes”. Never is a long time. Some people know how to reload to higher specs than manufactured.

This is an email I sent to a friend linking this article

Buy Low, Sell High

to XXXXXX

This is something everyone should do, on anything.

The reason I am mentioning this is that when these things go UP, they go into the statosphere.

What I am talking about is the AR 15. EVERYONE SHOULD OWN AT LEAST ONE. Even if you have no interest at all in shooting or shooting sports, they are like gold when societal instability hits.

Trump has absolutely KILLED the price of these things. You can buy a good quality entry level AR for less than $500. When the politics change (and they will), they go up crazily. After the school shooting in Rhode Island happened, I considered selling one of mine for $2500+. AK (the commie version of the AR, but on a different platform) was selling for $2000+.

My opinion is that EVERYONE should have one of these rifles. They are cheap, accurate, reliable, and ammo is dirt cheap (for now). They are the most popular rifles in America. They are hated by the left loons with a fanatical passion. Believe me, if the political spectrum swings back to the left in 2020 (it well may) you will have an easy three bagger.

My strong advice is to buy AT LEAST ONE of these (and never sell it!), and practice with it maybe every three months or so. Great fun, and you will meet the oddest, most eclectic, and fun bunch of people you have ever known (gun freaks are delightful!). My stronger advice is buy THREE of them, and dump two of them if you see the prices go $2500+.

I would recommend buying them private party, (no records).

If you want to talk about this more, we can talk via phone.

This is both practical (in case someone comes into your home in the future) in that an AR is certainly an effective anti personnel weapon, matched only by a 12 gauge shotgun at close quarters), a great hunting tool, and, again, loaded with the kind of political baggage that makes it a better play than gold or silver. If I could buy a futures contract on “the AR 15 rifle” I would certainly do so.

Think about it.

I think the significance of this article is that it was posted in The Federalist. CW is in the wind.

Well, as long as we have a functional legal system, and you might have to defend your justified shootings to a jury, I would agree with not using reloads. Some prosecutor might try to imply you premeditated the killing by your reloading ‘special’ loads for that purpose. I use the common loads that LEO’s use for defensive rounds. For a jury, “if its good enough for the cops, its good enough for me”.

Of course in a MadMax world, go for it.

The CW2 economy seems to be doing just fine. Check out a Bass Pro, Cabella’s, or what have you on the weekends. Brownells, Midway USA, Primary Arms, all seem to be getting on just fine. SG Ammo and other wholesale ammo suppliers are bringing in very large buys from over seas. The 3GUN, 2GUN, Carbine, competitions are becoming far more frequent and attendance is booming.

From a blog post at Eaton Rapids Joe on the subject of "Good enough and plenty of it."

"We fight, and win or lose, our battles with the equipment that has been deployed in quantity.

We may lust for ARs and monometal projectiles but the battle in the trenches will be decided with 10/22s, Marlin 795 semi-autos and bulk packed .22LR ammo and Mossberg 500 pump shotguns."

Good article.
I like the 300 Blackout for short range. The AR15 is a great rifle....it’s no wonder the communists/libs hate on it so much. Too bad....for them.

I had never thought about reloading as premeditation. But you’d be right to caveat that if the round was used to assassinate someone.

Of course its not to you and me.

Just legal advice from years of discussion regarding the topic in not so gun friendly states. Liberal prosecutors and liberal juries looking for intent that is not really there. We live in an irrational world now. Truth is a lie, and lies are truth. If you live in any urban area that leans left, I wouldn’t trust a DA/judge/jury to not use any excuse to find a defending gun owner guilty of a crime and declaring the illegal/criminal perp a victim of poverty/racism/circumstance.

I reload thousands of rounds a year... for range use or hunting.

My opinion is that EVERYONE should have one of these rifles.

That's what Ralphie wrote in his pre-Christmas theme at school in the movie "A Christmas Story". He only got a C+ and the teacher wrote "You'll shoot your eye out." Ralphie was pissed.

I agree with you, by the way.
