The Coming Crises for Christian Colleges
James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal ^ | January 16, 2019 | William Anderson

An African-American pro-life speaker recently spoke at a Midwestern college and several members of the school’s student government declared the speaker “had made many students, staff, and faculty of color feel unheard, underrepresented, and unsafe on our campus.” On America’s politicized campuses, that hardly is news.

However, these were not students at some notoriously leftist school like Oberlin; they were students at Wheaton College in Illinois, a well-known Christian college. Wheaton was the alma mater of the late evangelist Billy Graham along with three missionaries famously martyred in Ecuador in 1956. But today, a pro-life viewpoint that supposedly is common at Christian colleges now is considered “controversial.”

Wheaton’s turmoil is a microcosm for Christian colleges in the United States, which until recently have enjoyed protected status in higher education. For more than a century, Christian colleges have operated in a parallel universe to their secular counterparts. Some, like Wheaton, are non-denominational while others, such as Covenant College in Northwest Georgia, are tied to a denomination (in Covenant’s case, the theologically-conservative Presbyterian Church in America).

Christian colleges in the past have operated with minimal government oversight. Most are accredited by the same regional accreditation associations that also grant academic recognition to secular private and public colleges and universities, and generally have good reputations for their undergraduate academics.

Christian colleges also have rules governing student conduct in many areas, including consumption of alcohol, sexual behavior, and even for social dancing. Sex outside marriage is strictly forbidden at many Christian institutions, along with homosexual conduct, with colleges justifying their regulations from the Bible, which prohibits homosexual and extramarital sex, and drunkenness.

Most college nowadays promote homosexuality and transgenderism. Why would someone choose to attend one of the few colleges that do not promote these things and then cause trouble? I get it — the goal is stamp out any disapproval of sodomy and genital mutilation.

Simple enough to handle if the school weren’t terrified to do so - expel the complaining students.

Student government? They need to be told that they are there to plan events like dances and advise, not to institute snowflake policies and all the other latest trends of modern day Babylon and Sodom.

If and when they become successful like Rev. Billy Graham, then their advice (and their donations) will be welcome.

Politics follows culture, and religion will too if not specifically prevented.

Looks like the real problem is that there aren’t enough traditionally Christian administrators and teachers, nor are there enough traditionally Christian students.

Right on!

There are now a number of private post secondary schools, which inform the prospective student of the schools biblical/conservative positions and teaching, to include signing an agreement with the school, confirming their knowledge of the schools positions, and they (the student) will not support, protest, or take part in any activity which would subvert the same informed principled positions.

In some cases, the schools have still had to discipline or remove students, where lawsuits were filed against the same schools, but in the end, so far the courts have taken the position of the schools.

Still a very sad commentary.

“Still a very sad commentary.”

Yup, it just gets harder for organizations to take out the garbage. The school should be able to just refund whatever tuition that may have been paid for the rest of the year and boot the students out.

Democrat thugs will destroy those schools as soon as they have the power.

Most are accredited by the same regional accreditation associations that also grant academic recognition to secular private and public colleges and universities, and generally have good reputations for their undergraduate academics.

I just attended a speech last night by Hillsdale President Larry Arn. According to him, the US Department of Education (DoEd), by forcing these accreditation associations to DoEd standards and criteria, is basically nationalizing this process to LEFTist Academia standards. His concern is that this can and will force even Colleges like Hillsdale to modify their standards so that their graduates do not get frozen out of post-graduate schools (law, medical etc.).

The LEFT cannot tolerate competition and they dominate Academia and almost all levels of government bureaucracy. I find this back-door move by the embedded tyrants of DoEd horrifying in its ability to do such even with President Trump in office. A nauseating reminder of how the bureaucrats can operate with their own agendas, regardless of who is the ELECTED Leader as President!

Coming? Here!

And most of them welcomed it.

The Frankfurt School long ago infiltrated “Christian” education institutions - including especially seminaries.

See Fuller Theological [what I call Fullest Heretical].

Yes. And the judiciary is complicit.

Trump has only made them treble down.
