Actually this is a return to normalcy and not a some fictitious tight labor market. This is what it SHOULD be like when looking for work. It shouldn’t be that hard to get a job if you want to work.

Not in the case of your son. They knew his fine work and were acquainted with him. They were screaming glad to get him. Besides, we don’t know about the content of those phone hires, or the turn-over rate of wrong hires. Perhaps resumes were texted in to the company before the phone hire could happen fand references checked, as well as the background check. Some hiring practices are required by law. Liability is generally of some concern to decent companies.. ( I didn’t read the details of the story, though. ) 😌

As during the Reagan era in the 1980s, the next stage in the booming Trump jobs market will be employers suffering vacancies in frontline managerial jobs. Especially if immigration is curbed, employers will have to promote from within candidates whom they would have previously rejected. They will also have to boost salaries and benefits and improve working conditions for existing employees.

This shift will prove difficult for many companies whose managers have long been driven by cost-paring and often arbitrary pickiness about hiring and promotion. Companies that fail to adapt to the newly competitive labor market will experience service breakdowns and declines in customer satisfaction. Complacency and fumbles will cost many companies dearly.

So the job market is literally so good that people can’t believe it?

If we keep going in this direction for another decade or two, wages might even return to their historical averages!

Given the vastly higher quality of life for remote workers, any company which can functionally accommodate them better start making plans to do so.

.....”Anyone who wants to work, can get a job”.....

For sure. I can’t recall when I’ve heard anyone complaining they couldn’t find work.

I got hired over 15 years ago at my present company when the supervisor at the time called the company I was at (ISP) and needed some help with her personal Outlook email account. As we talked I told her the place was closing and would she have any openings at her place. I was just making conversation and did not expect anything. She replied that they had 2 openings and to send my resume. I emailed it during the call as everyone was working on theirs at the time : )

She looked it over and said to come in on Tuesday. I did and met the manager who had flown in from back east and he said after the interview that they will let me know. I thought that was it but I got a call and asked to come in again on Thursday. I was given a piece of paper with an offer and it was $11,000 more then I was being paid so with my best poker face I said I would take the job. I was very excited on the way home!

I was asked if I could start on Monday but I told them I had to stay at the other company for another week to qualify for the extra severance pay they offered and also I had no vacation in over 4 years so I asked to start after another week after that. They agreed.... : )

They have regretted it ever since!

#17 We have a new big boss who emailed everyone about 2 weeks ago that those working from home had to come into the office everyday. The night shift work from home in the dept I am in. I work days so come in.
We have people working in another city and halfway across the state and some who are 80 miles one way. He said they had to apply to HR for permission.

He said it was disruptive.... Then the brush fires started and those that could work from home were asked to do so.

#19 We have had people fail background checks after being hired but before they start so I suspect drugs played a part.

...had to come into the office everyday.

every day

Everyday = commonplace; ordinary.

I lived this as a Human Resources manager in Europe. There was 1% unemployment in our area. We were always desperate for admin assistants. The 20-somethings would come in and ask to see their desk area, tell us what vacations they had planned coming up, asked not to sit near the air conditioning, or say they needed a window, or a 2 hour lunch. They could demand all kinds of stuff because they were in the position of having companies fight over them. Quite an interesting experience.

It forces some workers to cheat the tests. You can test + for weekend pot use or even harmless cbd oil.
