Why You Should Try the .300 Winchester Magnum
If you go through a dedicated hunter’s gun safe, you’re probably going to find at least one gun chambered for the .300 Win Mag cartridge.
There are a lot of good reasons for that, and it really is one of the cartridges that every shooter should consider adding to their armory.
It is one of the most popular options in spite of the huge variety of cartridges that hunters can choose from because it offers great ballistic characteristics for a huge variety of purposes.

It is vital that you understand the cartridge before you put it to use. Winchester designed it in 1963 by adjusting the popular .338 Winchester Magnum cartridge.
They simply lengthened the design and moved the shoulder forward to produce the new design.

Long Range
That may not sound like a big change, but it produced a potent cartridge. It has a high muzzle velocity and a remarkably flat trajectory, so you can shoot it accurately over longer ranges than many of the competing cartridges.
Expert shooters that are using projectiles that have been optimized for long range can reach an effective range of slightly more than 1200 yards with this cartridge.

Low Recoil
The cartridge also has low recoil for its size, which makes it one of the more comfortable options for smaller shooters who need a decent amount of stopping power.

I mentioned to a friend of mine that I was going to get a 338 Lapua and he said before you do shoot my 300 win mag first. At my age I declined.

If you are worried about the recoil from a 300wm, don’t waste your time thinking about a 338 Lapua.

I wen with the 300 wsm. I needed a light rifle for mountains. The only drawback is recoil. My kimber mountain ascent goes under 6 lbs before a scope. I have developed a very accurate load at 308 velocities for eastern hunting. Best of both worlds.

The WSM is comparable to its big brother until you get to about a 180 grain bullet then the bigger case of the 300 mag makes it clearly superior.

In my “ute” I used a .300 win mag when hunting/stationed in Alaska. Good round. But, after putting roots down in the DELMARVA no longer had the need for such a hefty load. Great load for Elk or Caribou, or big bear. But whitetall? Not unless you wish to shoot it and gut it with one trigger squeeze...

“The” Go To round for whitetail, I have a Rem.760 and a Rem. 742 both in .308 as well as a Ruger Mk.vi custom built sub MOA in .308 ... still my absolute bar none favorite round is 30.06
