If it's accurate, Apple is making a boatload of money off of Google.
Wall Street firm Goldman Sachs has estimated (via Business Insider, registration reqd) that Google will pay a whopping $9 billion to remain the default search engine for Apples Safari browser. The report also estimated that the number could grow by $3 billion to $12 billion over the next year.
From $1 billion to $9 billion in four years. In 2014, court documents in Oracles copyright suit against Google, asserted that Apple received $1 billion from its rival in 2014. Wall Street firms had estimated the number at between $1 to $1.3 billion at the time.
But 2017 third party estimates had put the the figure that Google pays Apple at $3 billion. Theres uncertainty and disagreement about whether its a straight fee based on traffic or query volume or whether theres a revenue share on ad revenue generated by Safari as part of the agreement.
Safari the second largest browser. On a global basis, Safari has the second largest market share after Googles Chrome (59.7 percent vs. 14.5 percent). In the US, Safari delivers 31 percent of internet traffic to Chromes 49 percent.
In June 2013 Apple made Bing the default search engine for Siri but not for the Safari browser on the iPhone. Google replaced Bing as the source of web search results for Siri in 2017.
Wall Street analysts have been very pleased with the growth of Apples services revenue, which was reported to be $9.55 billion in Q3, up 31 percent since last year. Googles payments to Apple would fall into this services category.

“In other news, Apple raised prices on Macs and announced abandoning another generation of still good hardware.”
... I can understand kicking my G5 to the curb, though 10.6 might have been nice level of support, but Intel Macs?
Thread opportunist: Which browser are people using on iPhone with proper text wrap/reflow for FR? I had been using Puffin, but it is acting up after the IOS 12 upgrade (often displays no network even when the network connection is fine and no, it doesnt seem related to whether data compression is enabled). I am having to grab my Android phone to read my fav website!
So just use another search site or change the default.
$9 billion? Betting on idiots, good idea actually.
I switched over to DuckDuckGo. Its pretty decent, not as attractive with the layout, but its pretty effective
ditto
I should’ve bought Apple stock when Warren Buffet did.
“....I switched over to DuckDuckGo....”
I did as well. Love seeing google pissing away their money.
After the James Damore incident, I was motivated to make sure every device in the house (iPhones, iPads, multiple computers) did not use Google as the default search engine. I Duck.
I bought 10 years before Buffett. :p
You’re rich!
I don’t use it. I use Bing, and get the points towards the rewards. Better homepage pics, and they honor federal holidays with proper holiday wallpaper themes.
Brave browser with Startpage and DuckDuckGo as search engines.
Ha, I wish. It’s done well on a %-return basis, up 2000% or something, but needless to say, I started (and will undoubtedly finish) with a minuscule position compared to Warren’s.
Thanks, but neither Duck nor Brave support text reflow after enlarging font (they go back to the original tiny font).
What do you use for e-mail? yahoo! reads every bit of mail and spams me.
Tell them
Hotmail and one from a separate domain provider that comes free.
Brave + DuckDuckGo work very well for me too.
How do they make the money to pay these high fees?
