It was a real honor to interview Dr. Iddo Netanyahunotable historian and brother of the Israeli PMfor this podcast episode about one of the most inspiring chapters in Israel's modern history: "Operation JonathanThe Most Daring Rescue Attempt in History."
"Fatty's in for a big surprise."
In reference to Idi Amin.
I don't recall the author, but he was able to publish a short story on the raid in about 2 weeks.
Hilarious! Man that guy was one of the most toxic dictators Africa has ever had... Did you hear in the episode the title that he gave to himself? It’s even longer than that of Daenerys Stormborn.
I have Iddo Netanyahu’s book about the operation. It’s really fascinating.
I thought his brother was killed in the operation. Wonderful movie.
Yes, he was, the only IDF soldier killed.
so this is another brother?
Isreal, go forth.
Yes Iddo is the third of the three brothers. They are a remarkable family.
Yes, he has actually written a few different books about it, and they are all quite powerful. I especially recommend “Yoni’s Last Battle.”
The most recent and most detailed of Iddo’s books on it is only in Hebrew so far, though, so hopefully they will translate it soon.
NYC, Saturday July 3, 1976, my Buddy and I were on the water in the middle of the Bicentennial weekend celebrations viewing the sailing ships coming down LI Sound to the East River to partake in OpSail ‘76. We had recently heard that Israel was negotiating for the hostages at Entebbe. We were both suprised, and somewhat dismayed because in the past, Israel had always refused to do so.
Early Sunday morning, July 4, 1976, on our way through the North River to the Hudson to watch the tall ships and all the others parade up to the George Washington Bridge we heard the news of the raid. On this boatload of non-Jews there were nothing but cheers, smiles and a sense of pride in what our friends and allies had accomplished.,
Hats off to this famous rescue. Want to read about another daring rescue? Read the book, (not the movie), The Finest Hours, about a Coast Guard rescue in 1952. It was all about risking life to save life and did not have to waste anyone in the process.
Hey I was on the CGC Eagle coming up the river on my 1st Class cruise. Semper Paratus.
In August 1994 two planes from our C-130 airlift unit were deployed to Uganda to assist in the movement of relief supplies to the survivors of the Rwanda massacre. One of our planes was parked in front of the old control tower and the other in front of the terminal where the hostages were held. A few of us actually got a tour of the tower, which still showed the scars of the battle that night of the rescue. We did not get to see the inside of the terminal, as it was occupied by numerous squatters. While we were there, there was a newspaper article about a paralyzed Israeli soldier who was visiting for the first time since he was wounded in the raid. I imagine he toured the airport area where we were, but I wasn’t there when he did.
Thank you for posting that, it was a most enjoyable listen. Our #1 son is a Jonathan :)
Semper Fidelis.
Did ya see me?
Richard Pryor
“Two D’s...Two A’s....and one gun!”
The Tall ships went from the Atlantic up the Hudson River and back down they never set foot in the East River due to the bridges. BTW the North River is the Hudson River POTUS Regan was at a reviewing stand on Governors Island watching with Nancy...
