If country is first, why won’t McCain show up for SCOTUS vote . . . or resign so someone else can?

I agree. He wants to die as a sitting senator. He probably hopes it will shine over all the crap he has pulled for decades.

If he actually is dead, yes.

It requires 2/3 of Senate to expel a member.

Gladys Noon Spellman’s House seat was declared vacant by the House on voice vote....not clear whether a 2/3 or majority vote would have been required had it gone to the floor. I am thinking 2/3 though.

Hale Boggs and Nick Begich (also House members)...their plane went down, never found.

This one makes it sound that it was the House rather than the State of Louisiana that declared Boggs dead.

This one sounds like it could have been the State of Alaska rather than the House that declared the Begich seat vacant.

I didn’t make myself clear. All I was trying to say is when
McCain is officially dead the replacement is under the gov’t
of Arizona. The appointee would serve until the next election
in 2020 at which time someone would be elected by the AZ voters
to serve the remaining two years of the term. The normal election
in 2022 will be held for a six year term.

Sorry for all the confusion. Take care.

But you raised some interesting questions, even inadvertently - can the governor demand proof that the senator is still alive? Can he (or the state of Arizona) declare the seat vacant or does the Senate have to do that?
