VANITY: Looking to dump Gmail for something more data-safe
My addled brain | 04/09/2018 | Myself

Posted on 04/09/2018 7:43:00 AM PDT by Spacetrucker

In light of the data issues that have been publicized as of late, I am seriously looking to dump Gmail, Fakebook, et. al., would like some suggestions for other email services that I would have less concern about my data being taken. I already use DuckDuckGo, so that part is good.

Get Thunderbird and install add-on named Enigmail (encryption). As long as you use Enigmail, they can’t see anything ;^)

If you have an android phone, you will still need a gmail acct. But you don’t have to use it as your primary email acct.

Host your own email server like Hillary did.

There are secure email services for a fee out there with encryption.

The best bet is to encrypt your email.

Was there a Email service under the name Ronald Reagen that offer anonymous email accounts? Wonder if you can pay with an anonymous prepaid credit card.

Protonmail is excellent. So is hushmail, but you do pay. Not a lot, though.

I registered my own domain many years ago, so no matter whose email system I use, with email forwarding, my email address never changes.

Reagan.com claims to provide privacy, but it costs $40 per year. I don’t know of anyone who uses it, so I don’t know how good it is.

Check out this listing of privacy conscious email services:
http://prxbx.com/email/

Of the ones listed I have an account with Runbox and have also used ProtonMail.

I use Thunderbird with Enigmail/GPG but it requires that the people you correspond with are similarly equipped. Most people can’t bother.

What is Enigmail?

Enigmail is a seamlessly integrated security add-on for Mozilla Thunderbird. It allows you to use OpenPGP to encrypt and digitally sign your emails and to decrypt and verify messages you receive.

Enigmail is free software. It can be freely used, modified and distributed under the terms of the Mozilla Public License.

Thunderbird is the Mozilla replacement for Outlook (I think it’s called outlook.. never used it myself.. the M$ email thingy)..

You put ALL of your accounts on there ;^)
