Kaboom - Redneck style!
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 2/28/2018 | J Hines

Want to see something fun?
These guys came upon an old propane tank on a small pond. With much time on their hand, they came up with the idea to blow it up since it was an old propane tank. With a .270 rifle, propane tank and friends. What better way to bond more with friends then to blow the propane to smithering, redneck style!

I can imagine the looks on the neighbor and passerby faces when they heard the explosion and cloud filling the sky.
Makes you wonder how many propane tanks these guys have blown up on the pond, they seem to be experts at this. They definitely got some fun that day. Have a look here of this fun kaboom redneck video.

Heheh...effing redneck crazy bastards. They weren’t far enough away, IMO. I saw one similar to this a while back, and a piece of the tank hit one of the guys.

And I know they have done it before.

You know how? Look at the way all the horses take off and bolt away as soon as he comes over with the gun! THEY have seen this before!!!!!!

I still couldn’t bring myself to light a tank like he did, but...he has done it before.

Crazy.

And fun.

There are videos of guys trying to explode a small propane tank with no success whatsoever. I suspect there were some explosives involved, other than the tank.

“horses”

Watch again. They fired a shot to scare them away. Also said “There they go” as they ran.

I prepped a 4lb container of Tannerite and had my neighbor shoot it from 50 yds, Marine and a neighborhood icon. This was about 8 years ago and we are still talking / laughing about it.

50 yds is way too close. It blew everything on my neighbors shooting range to pieces, the target frames and cardboard, and the debris rained down for quite awhile afterwards. We were very lucky nobody was injured.

Started shooting tennis balls filled with Tannerite and duck taped from 100 yds with my evil black rifle after that.

Idiot, drunk brave, or drunk...or all three!

Many years ago I watches a few drunk friends light a large homemade New Year’s Eve firework (about a foot and a half long, and perhaps 3 inches in diameter filled with black powder and bondoed at both ends. They had a hole in the top, a trail of gunpowder to it, and a pack of matches with a lit cigarette inserted into them which would burn down.

It was insanely risky, and I implored them to stop, but they were on a roll. Fortunately, nobody was hurt.

I had that same feeling in my gut watching that guy light the tank there...

A source of ignition is actually necessary in order to make the tank explode. If you just shoot a propane tank without there being a nearby flame or a simultaneous spark, all that will happen is a bunch of gas escaping from a bullet hole.

“You’d never catch me lighting the tank like he did. Brave man or idiot?”

There’s no air in the tank so lighting escaping propane won’t go back into the tank.

I think they started a flame at the tank before shooting it because prior experience showed that shooting a tank will not cause escaping propane to ignite on its own.

The tank didn’t blow up. The gun punched a hole or two in the tank, liquid and/or gaseous propane spewed out and ignited with a big flame.

I have shot little propane bottles before with .44 mag and they did not light, I am pretty sure there had to be some kind of flame present.
