The Russian airbase in Syrian Khmeimim was fired upon with the 82-millimeter automatic mortar Vasilek. About this, referring to the opinion of military experts, writes "Bulletin of Mordovia".

Among its advantages is a light weight (just over 630 kilograms), which allows placing the gun, for example, in a camper van and high rate of fire (up to 120 rounds per minute). The edition specifies, that "Vasilek" is charged by cassettes and fire in bursts. One detonated ammunition can disintegrate into 600 fragments. "It should be noted that mines of a caliber of 82 millimeters are practically impossible to intercept by means available for the Russian army. Abroad, attention was paid to a threat and work in this direction was more successful. So, in the NATO countries special artillery and laser complexes were developed. The Americans were able to protect their facilities in the Baghdad area from mortar shelling, "Bulletin of Mordovia" writes. The edition adds that the Syrian army is not armed with "Vasilek" mortar. Most likely, these weapons came from Turkey to the militants.

According to the article, insurgents used a Russian-made 82mm automatic mortar to attack a Russian airbase in Syria. The Vasilek is like a big blowback machine gun that fires mortar rounds. It looks like a small antitank gun but can both direct fire like a cannon and high-angle fires like a mortar.

It loads 4-round clips from the side of the breech and with a skilled loader, it can really crank out the firepower.

The Soviets used them extensively in Afghanistan, mounted on top of armored personnel carriers to break up Mujahadin ambushes.

Doesn't say anything about Russian casualties.
