Appendix Carry – what's all the hype about?
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 1/3/2018 | J Hines

There are many ways to carry your concealed handguns, which brings up the argument of appendix carry vs the four o’clock, small of back or under the armpit position, etc.
Appendix carry has grown in popularity, whether that’s by watching too many Hollywood movies or experimenting with the different position. Another thing that’s talked about is the carrier body composition as a factor. Seems like the thinner folks have an easier time concealing the handguns versus another who’s a little on the heavier side.
Whoa, lets put the brakes on here, in the appendix carry video Rob Leatham(Team Springfield) is talking with Rob Pincus (Personal Defense World) on the subject.

As you know Leatham isn't fat by obesity standard, but pudgy. With the correct body posture and technique, its easy to get the pistol out without pointing it at yourself, its quick and efficient.
Appendix carry’s concept is straight forward: The handgun is holstered at the front of the body where the hands are at most of the time. The advantages are many: a fast, intuitive, and easy to draw from nearly any body position; provides excellent retention and some comfort.
Some experts like Massad Ayoob have stated in Personal Defense World, "our hands are more likely to be in front of our torsos instead of down by our sides most in the time in everyday life,” which means “in real life,” our hands may be closer to the gun if the weapon is also at the front of the body.
For the weapon retention minded, "an attempt by a criminal to snatch your gun out of its holster from behind will probably be harder if your sidearm is in the appendix position." See the full appendix carry story and video here.

Pocket carry. If a gun is noticeably bigger or heavier or more awkward than my Galaxy S5 (in a bulky case), then I have no interest in carrying it. I use my phone, keys, wallet, etc., every day. Odds are that I’ll never have to use my gun, thus it should be the least noticeable thing I carry.

I have recently started pocket carrying just because it is more convenient than putting on an IWB hybrid holster.

The drawback is that there is no way I could draw while belted into my car, whereas I can draw when IWB carrying at the 4 o’clock position.

It’s always a compromise between convenience, capacity, and speed of draw. I’m just a ccw civilian, so my priorities are on the first one.

Appendix carry violates the “Don’t point a gun at anything you don’t want to destroy” rule.

I do OWB with a long button-down shirt as a cover garment.
I’m too old and fat to try appendix -especially if I’m driving.

Not a problem for me....I had my appendix removed in August, 2005.

Which is why I leave it somewhat hidden on the console while driving.

A Glock 23 with a mic holster is safe for mexican carry. The trigger is covered until you draw the pistol away from your body.

I don't have an appendix, so I should be OK...

I guess it’s OK for girls. The thought of re-holstering a Glock makes me pucker.

Drawing from right front pocket while seat-belted in and driving is easier if the pistol is repositioned every time the buckle is latched;
partially draw the pocket pistol with it’s holster to the top of the pocket.
Just enough to hook a few fingers around the grip, not enough for a full firing grip. Avoid the trigger.

YMMV, practice each and every time you sit in your car.

Pocket carry.

Trying to get something out of a pocket quickly is a hit-or-miss proposition.

My preferred pocket carry is my S&W Model 60 in an Uncle Mike’s holster, with the holster holding the grip outside of the pocket. Covered with a shirt, it is very hard to see & very easy to get to. If feeling uncomfortable, I can rest my hands on my pockets, which also allows me to take hold of my gun while looking like I’m just a little tense.

Prefer pocket carry. I can put my hand in my front pocket whenever I sense a threatening situation; finger on the safety ready to go, and thumb on the pocket holster ready to push down on the holster for quicker extraction. One smooth motion that has been practiced ad infinitum.

Nothing keeping you from owning two guns, one to conceal carry and one over the sun visor.

Need a proper holster.

I appendix carried the Glock often. Worked well with a suit.

But it was still pretty uncomfortable. There was an -exact- position it had to be in for it to work. Now I just open carry with the suit.

Screw em if they get offended. This wolf no longer cares about the bleating of the sheep.

When driving, I have one on my hip and one in the door pocket. Both holstered.
